Courier Company damaged my fence post

Hi,

A few weeks ago a lorry driver that was delivering to me hit a fence post that is approx 80cm tall, ploughed straight through it and didn't stop. He clearly would have known he had hit something. That fence post snapped in 2 pieces.

I contacted the company that I bought the delivered products from and they got into contact with the courier company. A guy from the courier company came to my house 3 weeks ago to collect the damaged post as there is a cap on the top that needed removing and attaching to a new post. I was told it would take 1 week to come back and place the new post back in the ground.

The job is simple. It is an easy to buy post, you simply buy the post, you take the metal cap off the damaged post and hammer it onto the new post, you come to the property and place it in the soil as it was not cemented in.

It is 3 weeks later now and it has not been replaced. I had no contact after them telling me it would be done within a week - no update. So I contacted them yesterday and was told it would be bought over today and it is now almost 5.30pm and nothing!

I feel this is taking way too long, especially considering the driver trashed the post and drove off. There has been no urgency and not enough communication for my liking. I feel that in 3 weeks you could replace a whole perimeter of garden fencing. These guys can't even replace one 80cm piece of wood in this time.

As it was a simple job I initially requested they send me the money for the cost of the post and I'd fix it myself, but they wanted to go through insurance and the courier company is now taking 3+ weeks to fix something so basic.

Just wondered what peoples thoughts are. I am fed up because I've had a 6month+ saga with BT trying to get Broadband set up in my new house which has only just been resolved and now I am dealing with these clowns who are sending me round in circles.

  • I think a post will be the least of their priorities.

It must a very expensive post for them to be using their insurance.

Did it have a solid gold cap ?

How can anyone "plough through" a single pole that is apparently standing on it's own ?

Is it urgent? Why do you think there should be a sense of urgency?

I know it must be frustrating but if it's purely a cosmetic fix and it takes another week, is it really a problem?

Does this even need answering? It's known as 'customer service'.

If I had driven into a post outside your house I'd have got you a new post within a week. Not claimed i'd do it in a week then go silent for 3 weeks.

But based on you comments you would be fine with this. You'd be fine with it taking 4 weeks and no communication as you're saying does it matter if it takes another week.

I think you're talking nonsense. If I trashed your property you'd definitely want a better response.

Well the courier company was delivering items to me from a retailer. It's up to them if they want to annoy the retailer who provides them with work. You would think it would be a priority. Whose to say the retailer wouldn't ditch the courier company for damaging property and not stopping and then taking 3x longer than needs be to resolve the issue. Yes, I would have thought it's unlikely they'd ditch the courier company unless this was a frequent occurrence.

I have no idea why they went the insurance route. I initially asked them to just refund £30 off my order and I'd fix it myself, but they wanted to go the insurance route.

it's part of a rope fence, so it's just posts with a rope attached forming a low fence. He hit the end post when coming out a junction.

    - another thing is - it's not my post, it's my neighbours so I have a responsibility to my neighbour to make sure this gets fixed. She's probably wondering what the heck is taking so long.
  • I see, in that case you should have passed on the details of the vehicle that hit the post to your neighbour and let her deal with it.

In fact, it is none of your business as you are not the injured party.

Oh I see, so it's really urgent.

You go on to say that it's not even your post, it's your neighbours, and you think it's me talking nonsense?  It's nothing to do with you, whatsoever.  It's a matter between the courier company and your neighbour.  So yes, I'd be totally fine with however long it took and a lack of communication because it would have nothing to do with me.

We have been doing a bit of work around the garden and went to get some fencing stiff.  According to the builders yard there is a bit of a shortage of wood products at the minute - if true that could be the reason.

Its not your responsibility, you pass on the details of the courier to your neighbour and that's it as far as your responsibility goes.

Like others have said, I would have given the courier company's name to the neighbour and they could sort it out between them.  What happens if the post isn't to the neighbours liking, do they again have to come through you to the courier again to get it sorted, you're making more work out of it than needs to be I'm afraid.
