Parcelforce post delivery HMRC Charges

Hi
At Xmas I ordered a new phone. Came from Spain but wasn't aware of that. It was delivered on 23rd of Jan
Just had a letter from parcelforce ask ing for a total of £71.55 the majority of which is import tax at 54quid. On a 300 quid phone. Is this legal, do I have to pay it (as I've already got the phone) and what are my options?

It's not import tax, it's VAT(20%) + a small handling charge.
Since 1st January you are liable to VAT (and import duty if applicable) on goods received from the EU.
So all perfectly legal.
