Thanks - I'm still weighing my options up at this point to be honest... Her birthday isn't until mid August so it gives me some time, but I like to get these things sorted prior...matelodave said:I think we'd like to know what you eventually get.
I did actually take a trip down to Currys to be able to see and feel the AirPods as I've never actually seen pair in person up close before. They seem cool, but I have a feeling they will get lost much quicker than I'd hope.
I had a chat with her yesterday and she actually seems to be leaning towards over-ear headphones. Strange child is obviously like me and doesn't follow normal trends haha. I've had a quick look online and the Bluetooth version of these look even more expensive - Uh-oh!
Had a chat with the boss and she's said that we can make room for a slightly higher than normal budget. Our daughter did great in her exams and didn't get much in way of gifts, party or even a prom due to COVID, so we're hoping to give a combined (bigger) birthday/prom/exam-well-done present into one...
Our budget is give-or-take £350. Do you think the Sony ones above would be a good option? I have found another set of Sony wh-100xm4 like mentioned above but they're £100 cheaper than the rrp on Sony's site. Are they definitely the same ones with the microphone?
Also, I was hoping for something more old school record player style as I think she would prefer the vintage but modern element.

The Sony XM4s are currently one of the best over ear, noise cancelling headphones out there if you don't mind spending that much. I wouldn't buy from that site linked to, particularly when spending that amount. Best stick to the more reputable outlets, such as Richer Sounds or John Lewis.

I always make the distinction between quality home HiFi and portable devices. I would pay anything for headphones to leave at home. A 17 year old with an iPhone etc they are likely to get lost, stood on, broken etc. I wouldn't pay £350. My kids buy them themselves if they want to. The idea is that if they pay so much they will look after them. One of mine bought the Sennheiser HD450BT for themselves. Will see how long they last for.0

Thanks, there's a richer sounds not too far away, so I may see if I can pop in store to see them in person. Hopefully i can try them but not too sure with COVID ect. We'll see and I'll keep you updated.neilmcl said:The Sony XM4s are currently one of the best over ear, noise cancelling headphones out there if you don't mind spending that much. She's very good with her belongings to be honest, and I have no more worries of her losing or breaking anything any more than my wife or myself would... As i said above also, it's a joint birthday/prom/exam present, hence why pushing the boat out a little bit more on this occasion.fred246 said:I always make the distinction between quality home HiFi and portable devices. We were also thinking of something a bit cheaper - like a Bose AE2, and use the rest to buy her a couple games for the switch or vouchers to spend on the game store.
Glad we've not left it too late to be honest, seems to be a bit of a minefield 0 0

I've got the Bose AE2 headphones and am very happy with them, however if my 18 year old daughter is anything to go by she wears over ear headphones whilst sat at the computer at home but will not wear them out and aboutMazintim said:

If you’ve got 350 budget I would recommend AirPods Pro for around 200. She will get all the features available from the iPad. With third party headphones she will only have basic features.I don’t like spending lots of money but I can’t recommend AirPods Pro highly enough when paired with iPad or iPhone.0

The AE2 are wireless but not noise cancelling so thats a decision to be made, whether noise cancelling is a requirement.Mazintim said:

Although my headphones are pretty cheap and cheerful, the noise cancelling feature, does make a differnce if you are in a room with others and TBH i wouldn't be without it when I use the train as it helps subdue the sound of the chattering classes
Sony have a pretty good range of headphones and IMO the difference between the 1000xm3 and xm4 isn't really worth the £50 premium. https://www.whathifi.com/best-buys/best-sony-headphones-budget-premium-bluetooth-noise-cancelling. RicherSounds have a good price on the XM3's at the moment have a look at their headphone pages - https://www.richersounds.com/headphones/wireless-headphones.html
You can spend any money you like from £25 to £2500 but in the end, you really do need to audition the phones yourself (or your daughter does) to decide whether they not only sound good but also fulfill the function, style and comfort that is required of them Don't underestimate comfort, some phones can really become quite painfull if they dont fit properly.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers1

Thank you everyone for all the recommendations: a decision has now been made, courtesy of the birthday girl herself!
Ultimately she didn't go for any of the recommendations (sorry), however we did take a trip down to our nearest Richer Sounds store. Thanks for the heads up on this one @matelodave - great shop with really helpful and knowledgeable staff.
We took our daughter with us as ultimately this is her choice, and we'd rather get something she will like, appreciate, and keep for a long time.
As per everyone's recommendations, we headed straight to XM3's and XM4's. As mentioned above, the £60 difference didn't seem to add much more.
After a small wonder round and a chat with the chap helping us, she was drawn to the Shure AONIC 50 and the Marshall Monitor 2 - both for their retro/modern style. And as both are the same price, it really came down to the itty-gritty of it.
Ultimately, for price, looks, function, build quality, sound and everything else you could think of, the Marshall came top out of all three. It provides her the wireless, retro-but-modern, over-ear headphones that she was after with functionallity across all of her devices. There's also a built in mic, touch features on the outside and much more. The distance on it is great, and the noise-cancelling also.

Honestly, I'm tempted to get myself a pair now
On a serious note, thank you everyone for your help.
