Hi all,
Here's one for all you techies. The home I now live in is a plot with another house and they used to belong to the same person. My phone line goes from the BT pole opposite to the neighbours house then to me. My question is: will this have an impact on my broadband speed? as the line isn't direct to me. Any comments greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It depends, if the cable from the pole simply attaches to the other property and then runs uninterrupted to your property then it makes no difference that it ‘bounces’ off the other property’s wall, on the way to your property, if the line actually enters the other property and terminates, and then some sort of ‘internal’ wiring gets the service into your ‘property’ then it probably will have some effect, but if that were the case the ‘bill’ for the service would have the other property’s address on it , not your address, and you would just be an extension off someone else’s service.2

Thanks iniltous. I'll have to see how tech minded the neighbour is and see if he knows. I do get my own bill just wanted to know if my suspicions were right. BB speed has always been crap but thought it was just becoz I rural.0

It probably is because you are rural - have you actually check what should be available at your house - try this - https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL and use your phone number rather than your address.
The speeds you get are determined by where you are connected, possibly direct to the exchange, via a cabinet and whether the cabinet is fibre enabled and lastly by the length and condition of the cabling between you and the cabinet or exchange. Most cabling has multiple joints between you and the exchange and the further away you are then the more joints there'll be and distance has a really significant effect on speed.
Have a look here - https://www.increasebroadbandspeed.co.uk/2012/graph-ADSL-speed-versus-distance and dont forget, the wires dont go direct, so the cable distance cound be significanly more than the direct "crow flies" distanceNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
Thanks matelodave for the info. I've checked bt and used samknows to compare details. The neighbor says his bb is really fast (whatever that is?!?) but can't tell me about the wiring inside his loft, my connection is 30mb which I'd be more than happy with but I'm only seeing about 10mb so I guess that's what I'm stuck with until they get around to gigabit which is "coming soon" ie sometime never.0
