I've received a large over payment from my local council, iv tried contacting them about it and they say they cant possibly have made a mistake.
im disabled and on benefits, and im at a loss to what to do other than hang on to it in a savings account. but it will come to a point when i will have to declare the money to the benefits office.

A little confused by this part here? Do you have savings that you didnt declare so this is why you've been overpaid benefits? more information is needed before anyone can help.

i can only guess as the council say theres no mistake. But its for a careers allowance, which is paid yearly if you qualify. at least the info from the bank matches with past payments0

Carers allowance isn't paid from a local council and it's not paid yearly.

its not careers allowance.
its a yearly "gift" for want of a better word for careers through the local careers part of council. same people that run the young careers org. its normal only £200 or less that i get spend on courses, or a day out for my self, as im a full time career and disabled.0 -

What benefit is the money for? housing benefit or council tax reduction?Sorry but you're not making a lot of sense here and without more information it's difficult to advise.1 -
at least thats what iv been waiting for, and the bank details match to my local councils. but the payment is way tomuch0

So it's a direct payment from your local council? if you've contacted them and they've said it's correct then it must be correct. Do you have a letter from them telling you about this money? If so then keep the letter as proof if they chase after you to return the money.

The problem is with the amount they sent, otherwise id agree with you poppy.
They haven't said the amount is correct, only that this couldnt have happened. iv talked to the manger from the local careers. and they are trying to get them to acknowledge the mistake. but its been a day now with nothing but a headache to show for the efforts0
