It is not a legal requirement* however, as davidmcn said, the shop can refuse to sell it to you if you don't do it.
*although it used to be when buying a TV as the retailer was obliged to inform TV licensing of anybody who bought a TV

it is certainly not obligatory to give your ***real*** address...0

It is however illegal to give false information with fraudulent intent.pbartlett said:it is certainly not obligatory to give your ***real*** address...
Basically, if you are not happy with the shop's terms of business the correct thing to do is buy elsewhere.2 -
yes i would agree with that - if you intend to defraud the shop don't compound the problem by giving false details.0

Several years back there was a posting on this site were the poster was desperately trying to get a refund having paid by cash and lost the receipt. The company told the customer that they could find the receipt if they told them their postcode. The problem was that when the poster purchased they seemed to think it was a gross invasion of their privacy to provide their postcode so they gave a false one and could not remember what it was. The company could not find the receipt and therefore refused the refund.sar12345 said:Hello! They came on this site bad mouthing the company saying how they had been scammed etc. etc. - the usual inane rant you often hear. They really started throwing their toys about when the posters on this site told them that it was their own fault for not providing a postcode - at one point the poster seemed to think the company should go through all receipts until they found his (they failed to see the stupidity of their wonderful brainwave).
With a debit card however you may be able to use your bank statement as evidence of purchase.
Personally I find it simpler to just supply the postcode - its not exactly a secret, even my postman seems to know it.I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!4 -

No. I had this some years ago when I bought a laptop from Dixons (yes, I know... but there were circumstances). They insisted on having my name and address. When I asked them what for they said 'the guarantee innit'. I refused and said I'd buy the laptop elsewhere if necessary, and they backed down.
All that said they would have been perfectly within their rights to refuse to sell me the laptop, and that would have presented me with a problem, but I wasn't prepared to be dictated to by the likes of DSG.0 -
Depends on what you are buying...sar12345 said:Hello! Does anyone know whether it is obligatory to give your address when purchasing an item in a shop (by debit card) thanks!
Do you think you will be able to buy a car without providing the details.
If you are talking a bottle of milk, then its a different story.
So you are asking a question, that poses more questions than answers....Life in the slow lane0 -
Or you can give your email address so if you lose the receipt there's the proof of purchase.
