Exit fee Virgin Media . Moving home but they don't provide service on new flat.

Hi,
I was asked to leave the current property as it requires urgent electrical installations ( consumer board, wiring, etc) due to some issue with the current system (quite an old installation). I have managed to find a flat with very short notice ( new built flat for keyworkers, managed by the local council). I've checked with Virgin Broadband if I could move my fibre connection to the new flat but they don't provide service there ( literally 10 mins away from current place) then I ask them to terminate the service but they are asking £270 as exit fee. I was not ready for that & I have many additional cost related to moving ( furniture, washi machine, etc). If I pay this amount I will be in huge debt. Is there anything I can do to avoid this fee ? I was not prepared & was not expecting this to happen. thank you.

Your existing contract is to supply at your old address. You are breaking the contract by moving out and leaving them unable to supply, so you are immediately liable to pay early termination charges.VM, like all ISPs, will waive the ETCs if you recontract at your new property, however, since you chose an ISP which does not provide a universal service there is always a risk that they won't have built the a network to where you are moving as in this case. It's unfortunate that you had to move, but as far as your contract with VM goes, irrelevant.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

This is a query that comes up time and time again and unfortuanely the answer is always the same - yes you will have to pay the ETC as you have terminated the contract early.
Most( but not all) providers will waive the Early Termination Charge if you take out another contract with them at your new premises, but if you can't or don't then they all impose it even if it's down to them who cannot supply you at the new address.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0
