Removal of Old Gas Pipes?

Hi all,

We're in a 1955 bungalow, and have what seems to be two old (presumably capped) gas pipes.

The left (smaller) one, I believe is the old gas pipe to the old gas fire (we've a wood burner now). This runs along the skirting board, up into the loft, and to somewhere else (not yet checked where).

The right (larger one), I've no clue what it is! Any ideas? This seems to run down under the floor, and comes back up in the airing cupboard. It doesn't go higher behind the wood — it is capped right there.

We're in the process of plastering our walls, installing new laminate flooring, installing newer (and higher) skirting boards... as well as replacing the built-in cupboards that sit either side of the wood burner. So, these two pipes are both in the way.

Is it wise to have them removed? If so, would anyone know what the expected costs of that would be?

Thank you one and all.

  • What do you have that's still gas - a boiler? A hob? And how do they get their supply - via completely different pipes?
Yes, I'd have everything removed that was no longer in use. Not only are they an eyesore, but will always present a potential for being damaged and leaking.
Cost? That depends on how traceable they are - if the GasSafe can get to where they start - ie near the meter - and isolate them there, it's a half-hour job virtually all of which is labour.
If, however, they share a supply to the boiler or hob, the GS would need to get to that 'tee' and isolate them there. They might even try and just cap them off where they disappear beyond walls, floors and ceilings, but I personally wouldn't be happy with that (not sure how it sits with regs either).
Not sure the copper pipe in the bottom pic is gas - that looks like a normal 'water' isolator. And is that an open end of a pipe coming through the floor?! Going by the verdigris, that was likely water too, but I'm not sure. Clearly it is no longer in use.
If you cannot trace where these gas pipes go yourself, then you need your GS to do so. How big a job could this possibly be? 2 hours tops? A couple of £undred max?
