Steve Parrish, ex bike-racer and best mate of Barry Sheene, has PEN15 and PEN115.
A lady I knew called Penny in Kidderminster had PEN51 but I've not seen it around for a long time.
How does that make out as "penny"?
I dunno.  Maybe Penny was born in 51 (which would be about right), or maybe she lived at No. 51. A personalised plate is just that for yourself - personal.

It's interesting to see that on checking, the plate is not currently in use.
Thanks but the reg does not read well IMO.
Fortunately, you have no say in the matter.  People spend their money how they want. So you don't have to worry a bit.
"no say" where on earth did I indicate I had a "say" in anything where someone has legally purchased then display a car reg or anyhting for that matter?   I'm a very strong advocate of hard working people and taxes and people have the 100% right to spend their money, give it away as they wish as long as they pay their bills.

    Good morning.

M'wife has reminded me of another reason to change the plate - not just vanity.

What if the car comes with a letter combination that you can't abide?  She didn't want to end up with a combination that doesn't mean anything to a casual observer but is an acronym that reminded her of work.  In her case (being a pathologist) a disease!

When she ordered her MX5 a few years back, the dealer didn't have a list of pre-allocated numbers; they just got whatever the DVLA gave them on the day they did a batch.  The manager said that he had in the past acquired a cheap non-dating plate for a customer who really hated the number they had ended up with.  So I did some research and if she had got a combination she couldn't stand; I would have bought  {Local letters} plus date plus {her initials}  for £299 to replace it.  It wouldn't look like a "personal" plate unless you already knew her.

I need to think of something new here...

You indicated 'you had a say' when you had a say, ie you said 'the reg does not read well IMO.'

The end letters 'FUD' are quite common in the UK, I can't remember which area they designate.
But you really don't want that up here, it's slang for 'ladies bits' and is used as a derogatory term too (that bloke is a fud)

In the old system - FUD 123 A or A 123 FUD  would have been an Oxford reg.

To me, that's an acronym for Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt  used in advertising/marketing, spin, fake news circles.
I need to think of something new here...
  • In the 1960's, when I was working as a motoring journalist, the press officer of BMC (British Motor Corporation) told me the story of how they tried to disguise their prototypes when testing on the road.  BMC always used Birmingham registrations which made their testing units very identifiable.  So to try and counteract this, they decided to register their cars in London.  They were allocated the series BMC *** A!

I knew a guy who bought numberplate '1P' after winning the lottery (he was already quite well off anyway).
He never really divulged how much it was other than it was more than the Merc Coupe he bought at the same time.....
He sold the plate and it used to be seen around Aberdeen, although not seen it for a while myself.

I once saw {my three initials} 1 up for sale at £25K.  I've never owned a car that cost that...  so I did wonder how rich I'd have to be to think it a good deal.  (Of course, no guarantee that it sold at that price).
I need to think of something new here...
