Royal Mail Refund Scam

Hi.
I have had a lot of Mail go astray recently so I decided to put in multiple claims with royal mail so as to be compensated.
To my astonishment, a few days later I received 5 cheques in the post totaling £90.
So I thought, this is to good to be true, I was expecting a few lousy 1st class stamps.
Anyways I went to cash the cheques and soon realised that Royal Mail had mispelt my name on them.
I was beside myself, I mean what a joke that the idiots can't even spell someone's name.
When I filled out the online claims I clearly spelt my name as "JON" and on the cheques it reads "JOHN".
I can guarantee on my life that this was a mistake that was purposeful.
I know this because I phoned royal mail and explained to them that they had completely ruined the cheques and a lady on the other end stated:-
"That's awfully strange as the claim forms are automatically uploaded by computer and all the correspondence is computerised".
Therefore someone in the claims department has manually purposely added a "H" to my name.
I am not thick and I know 100% that when I done the claims I had No "H" in my name.
The woman on the phone was speaking as if I was at fault and Not them.
I thought it was too good to be true and it would seem it was.
Royal mail are refusing to block the cheques and send new ones unless I send the cheques back to them with an accompanying letter.
It took 7 days from claim to receipt of cheques then its going to take 3 days for them to receive them back and then 3 days to receive the New ones and then 2 days for me to get to the bank to Pay them in and then 3-5 days to have them clear.
It's just an outrage.
Why can't they just pay my money as bank transfer instead of all this rubbish.
It's a farce and royal mail have done this on purpose so to delay my claim.
I have an online account with royal mail and they know my name and address because they deliver 50 items a week to me.
I'm Not Happy.

Assuming this is your Consumer Rights question within the above rant, they're under no obligation to pay you by bank transfer.

Is your bank actually refusing to accept the cheques with the trivial difference in your name?

So you want them to give you new cheques before you give them back the old ones? You are the one being outrageous now.

Neither my cheque books nor my paying in slips actually have my first name or come to that my middle name on them, just my first name initial and surname, where I've received cheques in the past with my first name slightly misspelt I've just paid them in anyway and none have been queried.

Did you actually try to 'cash the cheques' and the Bank rejected them or did you assume the bank wouldn't accept them and didn't bother to try?

As others have said, just pay them in.   You'll be surprised when they are accepted.     I've paid in cheque's into my account written in my wife's name.  No-one realised and it got paid without problems.

It appears to me that no-one actually reads much of the cheques anymore - the only time anything seems to happen is if someone actually complains about it.

I have paid in cheques with a complete mis-spelling of my surname.  A forename should be a doddle.  My bank (IIRC) said they were happy as long as the cheque was under £7k.
