Just Eat impose their fee as a Service Charge of 50p, on top of delivery charges of course.

I suspect it is the restaurant implementing the delivery charge. As some outlets have no delivery charge, and another take away place I use, varies its delivery charge based on the weather.
I think the 50p is Just Eat's fee for providing the infrastructure.
I think it used to be an explicit fee for credit cards until the law changed, then so did the description - they also started charging it on all orders, credit card or not.

(I say "I think" as I used to use the other one, Hungry House, until Just Eat took them over and I can't remember if that was before or after the law changed.)

Still plenty of firms out there pushing their luck. Local sandwich van that turns up at work wants to charge extra 20p if you use a card under £3.
I don't blame them. Would you REALLY use your card for a sandwich costing less than £3? Or even £3? I'd be too embarrassed but that may just be me. Plus they probably don't make much profit anyway. I'd say they were canny, not pushing their luck at all. It's not a very nice job at the best of times.

I'd give them £1. That's another awful job I'd hate to do. They're providing a service for those who don't want to cook. They deserve every penny.

ok thanks. The wording on the web site certainly made me feel I would be charged an extra £2.50 for not using a debit card. I'll read more carefully when I renew the wife's vehicle tax later this year
For more specificity, they stopped charging consumers for using credit cards on 13 January 2018. Businesses still have to cough up.

Foodhub is generally cheaper than Just Eat by the way.
(segwayed a bit from the original DVLA question :) )

That's just you. It's 2021 and contactless payments are the norm. Also with everywhere closed due to government incompetence where is one to get a readily supply of change from? I go to work and go home again, I can't go out anywhere to socialise (and get change) due to everywhere being closed. And banks are only open limited hours which always fall within my working hours.

I didn't pay the sandwich van the extra 20p, I just swapped out my sandwich for one worth £3 instead.

Oh and I'll say they will make plenty of profit as with everything to do with bread baking and pie making carries a high profit margin.

Before the law changed, Just Eat charged 50p for card payments and had actually claimed years ago on their Twitter feed that they made no money from the 50p card fee and that it all went to their payment processor. Once the law changed they renamed it as a "service charge" and put it on all orders, including cash on delivery and collection orders. This is what got peoples backs up as they had originally claimed they made no profit from the 50p card charge when in fact it is a substantial part of their business model.

This is relating to the old style Just Eat where the orders are sent through to the take away shop for their own delivery people to deliver, not the new UberEats/Deliveroo style set up of Just Eat supplied couriers.

Yeah I love FoodHub, some places do up to 20% discount on the menu prices plus FoodHub often have discount codes which can be stacked with the shop's own discount too. Yummy.

I have not used cash for nearly two years, so yes I would use a card, but probably a debit card. Fees on a £3 transaction would be 5p or less for a debit card and 15p or less for a credit card. As a business one would just factor this in as a cost of doing business, it also works out less than the banks cash handling fees.
