Insurance, new car and transferring number plate

My Dad is replacing his car and he's asked me to help with insurance. He has a number plate on his current car which he'll be transferring to his new car. Am I correct in saying he'll need to insure the new car under its current plate, then update insurance details when the plate transfers over to it? Is this likely to be viewed as a change mid policy, and there will be a fee? He has to take out a new policy for this car as his current insurers will not cover him for it. Thanks!

I presume he's PXing the old car for the new one, and there won't be any overlap between them?
If he wants to be sure he's not going to lose the rights to use the plate...
1. Transfer from old car onto retention. Wait for V5C to arrive with "normal" plate.
2. Complete car deal. Wait for V5C for purchase to arrive in his name.
3. Transfer onto new car from retention.
Talk to the insurers, but - yes - they will view it as a change. Because it is. They need to change the plate on their systems and MID.

To transfer a private number from one vehicle to another, you need to:
Take it off the vehicle you’re transferring it from.
Assign it to the vehicle you’re transferring it to.

Thanks, it's helpful to know that there are a couple we can look at who may not charge; something to bear in mind when I'm comparing quotes!
AdrianC yes it is part exchange and he's arranged for it all to happen on Tuesday so I don't think he can delay things. The dealership are helping him with the transfer, so I'm going to leave them to sort out that part of it!1 -
He won’t get a new V5 by Tue once he puts the current plate on retention.
He will have to px with the current plate and hope the dealer do what they appear to have agreed to.
Legally though- they are not obliged to

Indeed. If he PXs it with that plate still on the V5C, it's their plate.2

I just did this, applied online to DVLA for retention last Wednesday and received new V5 this morning.
Regarding Insurance, my soon to be ex insurer Esure have a facility online to change the registration, so I naturally went down this route only to get an email saying 'Unfortunately we haven't been able to process your request by email- please phone the number below'
I did this and got charged £26.91 for the privilege, - that was explained as £0.91 for the underwriters and £26.00 administration fee - Crooks0 -

Slightly different re insurance, also consider windscreen excess especially a chip, comes handy. One of our cars is very bigh so massive windscreen - several chips on it, once a lorry in front threw up a stone and two 1mm marks about 3 mill apart and the other time a car shot past threw up a stone and massibe nosie but another 1mm chip. When the weather improves Mr J to carry out repairs himself as I think the current insures charge just as much for a chip but I will need to check.1 -

Insurance is set up with Tesco now. We'll see what happens about changing plates and if there's any cost. I'm glad my post prompted you to reclaim your fee successfully @rubble2 ☺ that's great!
Dad is confident the dealer will sort the plate as agreed, so I'll leave him to get on with that side of it!1
