Creative Labs - broke mp3 player

Before I begin, I apologise if this is in the wrong place or anything, I wasn't quite sure where to put this.

Basically, I have a problem with Creative Labs, the people who do the mp3 players, and I don't know what to do, or if we even have anything to go on here.

In July, I bought a Zen Vision M 60GB off Amazon, because it was £90 off, and seemed like a great deal. I used my mum's credit card.
Sometime in September, I ACCIDENTLY dropped it while it was switch off. It was about a foot in height or less, in a silicone case, and the floor was carpet.
The next time I switched it on, it came up in Recovery Mode. I knew this was bad news, because I had another Creative a few years ago that did practically the same thing.
It has been booting up to Recovery Mode ever since, and no matter what I try to do (update firmware, format etc), it won't change.

I emailed Creative regarding this (I can post a full transcript if needed), receiving a reply in early October.
What I said was along the lines of yes, I admit, I did drop it, and what can I do.
I got a reply saying it was not under warranty because I dropped it, and gave me instructions for what to do to get it working again, all of them I had already tried. They also said that all they could do otherwise was give me money off getting a new one!

This is the second one I've gone through with almost identical problems, so no, I don't want a new one, I want my mum to get her money back (about £160), because we need the cash more than the problems I am having!!!

If anyone can give me any advice about what to do, or anything that could help, I will be truly thankful.

Are you saying that the fault is not related to dropping it? x

If it was purchased direct from Amazon - not a Amazon trader, try returning to Amazon under the guarantee. Amazon's return policy is very good, just say it's malfunctioned and won't operate, contact Amazon to tell them you want to return it and they'll tell you what you need to do.
  • You broke it and you want Creative Labs to give you the money back? That's unbelieveable. Is this a wind up?
Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before

I bought a new car earlier in the year and due to not paying enough attention I crashed it into a wall. It was only a small wall but the car refuses to start. This is the second time I have done this with exactly the same make and model of car and the manufacturer refuses to help me out other than offer me a trade-in value. Yes I know it was my fault but I want my money back.

Does this sound a little bit silly?

I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • Well thanks for all those really helpful replies

I'm glad you think it's a wind up, that's bloody charming.

I just thought that I would have something to go against Creative Labs for making an inferior product that won't stand up to much.

    Thanks for nothing.

thanks for the ungrateful reply.sorry you felt you could get somthing your not entitled to.
did it say on the creative product specs it was shock proof?

perhaps you should stick with tapes until you get the hang of the opposable thumb

I wasn't directing that to you, the insurance thing actually seems like something we could try.

It said in the booklet that you should not expose it to EXTREME shock. I don't think my case counts as excessive, because it's not like I threw it.

any drop is extreme shock.think about the scale.drop something like an mp3 player 2 feet.
now imagine letting your vhead drop the same distance with no bracing to stop yourself.
especially items like hard drive mp3 players just dont like impacts
  • This was a genuine question asking for some answers.

I DID NOT expect to get anything, I was just hoping if anybody had had the same experience, because this product was not cheap and I am careful with everything I have. What happens to the ones that people intentionally throw onto chairs, seats, etc?

I have had products from other companies that have lasted years with the same day to day usage, and they haven't been damaged in the way this has.

I know not to come on here again for any help, and I'm very disappointed that some of you can resort to insults for just politely asking for advice.
