Reporting my home loss comp payment

So the payment of £6500 was in my bank account this morning and as I previously found out both for IB JSA & HB it would be disregarded for 26 weeks.
I want to get in touch with them and report this and I thought phone would be best, but will the call handlers know what I’m talking about when I start quoting legislation to them?
Should I send a letter instead to DWP & email to the local authority instead and outline the legislation so they know what I am talking about and report the change this way?

You did not say whether you already had previous savings?
If you report this now then it is extremely likely that your benefits will be stopped/reduced until a decision maker decides whether this amount is disregarded for 26 weeks. This is especially likely if you telephone and speak to a call handler who will probably only 'report' that you have gone over the £6000 threshold.
Personally I would spend some money on white goods etc for your new home (keeping the receipts) and then report the change of circumstances.
Of course, depending on whether you already have some savings, the amount of reduction (£1 a week for every £250 over £6000 up to £16000) could be very small and you could report it now.
So, is the £6500 the only savings you have?

I have about £800 saved away and then this £6500.
I wanted to be upfront from the start so I spoke to the DWP and she said she would add to my claim how much I have received and what it was for.She did say follow it up with a letter and a bank statement and that someone from the benefit centre would be asked to call me.
She give me this address to send but it seems weird. Is it right?Hyde benefit centre

Should there not be a postcode?0 -
No postcode required as it will go to a mail handling unit.

Oh right okay thanks. When they confirm it’s disregarded . Do I still need to keep them up to date with spending and when it falls below £6000? Or because it’s disregarded I would only need to let them know if it was over £6000 after the 26 weeks?0

I wanted to come back and update and ask something. The council asked for information and a letter etc and confirmed disregarded for 26 weeks. The DWP I rang, they added something to their system, a decision maker rang me, asked me to send a letter, attaching a bank statement print out showing the amount going in and a letter from the housing association. I sent this on Monday 19th April. I’ve heard nothing since. Should I just wait for them to write? Assume the disregard is accepted? Or follow up with a phone call?0

It can take a while for them to receive what you sent, as you only sent it 2 days ago, they won't have received it yet. You should wait for at least 10 working days.

@poppy12345 - the OP stated that he sent the information in on 19th April, not 19th May.poppy12345 said:It can take a while for them to receive what you sent, as you only sent it 2 days ago, they won't have received it yet. You should wait for at least 10 working days.1 -

Oops, thanks. Not sure where my head was at that moment.
