Hi,

I am looking for Breakdown Insurance. Cheapest may not be "best" and I would appreciate comments from those who have good / bad experience after a breakdown.

I am leaning toward RescueMyCar.com

Many thanks  o:)

There will always be complaints no matter which company you choose.  Pick the one that offers the service
    you require.

I was with the RAC for many years but left them a coupld of years back and moved to GreenFlag.

On paper its the right service at the right price, never called them out though so little feedback on that side.

How many complaints are from people that have broken down and find its not covered or where they
have basic take you to the closest garage and are unhappy it wont take them from Cornwall to Scotland
because they ran out of fuel.  Silly complaints possibly outnumber the genuine ones where they
failed in some way.  Its likely to happen to any of the companies.

    Hi,

I am looking for basic Breakdown Insurance. Cheapest may not be "best" and I would appreciate comments from those who have good / bad experience after a breakdown

I was comparing recently after being offered breakdown cover included in a car insurance policy.

'Basic' cover seems fine as long as you dont need home start (is your car reliable enough to start every morning) and dont need to be taken to a place of your choice anywhere in the country (are you happy that the breakdown van will take you up to 10 miles and leave the car at a random garage to be fixed) and are you likely to need 'onward travel' cover where you will be taken to your destination.

Someone at work had to call out the breakdown recently as their brakes had failed - the local recovery man knew a local garage and dropped the car off there late one evening.  Unfortunately the garage were busy and every day said 'we will look at it tomorrow' - 7 days later it was back on the road!  As the car had no brakes, it was difficult to get the car moved and my colleague would have preferred it to be taken to his local garage close to his house in the first place but his cover didnt allow for this.

    Hope this helps.

As per this thread I use Nationwide with the cover inclusive with their FlexPlus account, £13 per month

I did have Nationwide Flex Plus, but cancelled this after I had problems when I tried to claim on their travel insurance.

I am leaning toward RescueMyCar.com with National cover >

    Included

    • Roadside assistance
    • Local recovery
    • Nationwide recovery
    • Onward travel
    • Emergency overnight accommodation
    • Car hire
    • Misfuelling
    • Out of fuel
Seems a bit too good to be true at only £28.08

Im with Britannia Rescue via my LV car insurance, had been with Britannia Rescue before on someone elses policy and service was great when had to call them.

I can't say how much as Ive moved properties and that meant an increase in premium.

Myself and other family members have used StartRescue (3-Star ‘vehicle’ cover) at various times since they first came onto the scene in about 2014. Their prices have always been very competitive for ‘vehicle’ cover. Their ‘Personal’ cover isn’t as competitive though.

StartRescues 3-Star cover gives you Roadside Assistance/Home Assist/Local & National Recovery et al. At the odd times they’ve been needed their response has been fine but we’ve never needed to use ‘Nationwide Recovery’ so I can’t comment on that facet of their service.

StartRescue’s prices appear to be only slightly higher than RescueMyCar for vehicles up to 4 years old;....however, for cars over 4 years the disparity increases, which makes RescueMyCar’s prices appear to be even more attractive. The Ts&Cs  do differ between the two companies though.

In addition, RecueMyCar’s policies can be reduced even further by taking a £40 excess. For a standalone 'vehicle cover' breakdown policy (i.e. one that isn’t connected to other insurance policies/Bank accounts/promotions et al) their prices look unassailable.

I’ll be assessing RescueMyCar 'vehicle cover' charges myself when our StartRescue policies are due for renewal.

RescueMyCar's prices rocket very rapidly, though - for the same cover as the Nationwide account (full Euro personal cover for two people), they want £180.

Yes, as and when we are able to drive to Europe. I shall probably upgrade my Nationwide Flex Direct account back to Flex Plus. Meanwhile £28.80 looks like a great deal. Reviews for their clients are encouraging.
