Ateca 1.0 TSI?

Hi looking for your opinions please?

A family member is looking at buying an Ateca 1.0Tsi with about 25k miles on the clock on an 18 plate, Are there any problems with this engine and what's the maintenance like for timing belt/chain etc?

If anyone has driven one as well what did you think of it?

Thank you!

Thank you for your comment, Do you think the engine is enough for the Ateca size? What sort of MPG are you managing to get?

115bhp really is borderline in a car of that size and shape.
I had the 95bhp version of the engine in a Polo, and that was bad enough.
If he stays somewhere flat, he may not notice.
If he stays somewhere there are hills (as I do) he'll find it needs worked hard and MPG suffers.
Even though I only bought it for a short commute and general second-car duties, I just got fed up of the lack of oomph and chopped it on for a 200bhp Gti.
The irony is the Gti doesn't give much worse MPG because it isn't working as hard.

My wife has the 1.0 Ateca. Performance is fine for around town. Its never going to win a drag race.

On long journeys it gets up to speed, but it takes a while.

Fuel economy isnt amazing, but shes just doing town driving, so I gues that would be expected.

Timing chain change due at 5 years. Last MOT advised the front discs were worn, but shes only done 13000 miles. Other than that, just standard servicing with no issues.

Long journeys were a pain in the 95bhp Tsi polo, because VW hampered it with very high gearing to improve economy.
Problem is the engine doesn't have the power/torque to pull the gearing, so it didn't take much of a hill for speed to drop in 5th and need a change down to 4th.
    It's not a timing chain, it's a belt.
Your wife's discs should still look like new after 13000 miles.

There hasn't been many problems with this engine or the engine is was based on, the 1.0 Mpi.

I believe there was a recall for all brands with the 1.0 TSi between 2018 and 2020 for leaky injectors.

Only your family member can tell if it has enough to drag them around, the car is only around 1300kg even though it appears a lot larger in the flesh.

You might find the upper end of the VAG brands have better NVH solutions, so tend to mask the odd thrum of a 3 cylinder better, the cheaper end tend to do with less and they can suffer a bit more NVH.

We repeatedly test drove this model and thought it good enough for what we needed, it was a tight choice but what tempted us away in the end was we could get something similar, with similar power just without the hassle of turbos and DMFs for slightly less.

No recall on my 2018 Tsi for injectors.
You ended up going for a non-turbo car, but still with around 115bhp instead?
It must be completely devoid of torque and what little there is is situated high up the rev band!
    Rather you than me!

The recall codes are: VW 24FO. Seat 24FP. Skoda 24FQ.

Perhaps yours wasn't on the list, as it's presumably older than it's registration plate suggests or it was missed or the previous owner had it fixed or is got fixed on a regular service.

Yes, I would rather be me than you, that is a certainty, make no mistake about that.

We aren't all the same and we want different things. Sometimes we want similar things, like a modest SUV and people ask for their opinion on those things.

Your opinion based on a different style of car with a different power to weight ratio might be useful, then again is might not.

Others with different experiences might also have useful or usless opinions.

I for one really take your opinion as being very useful. The OP is asking about an SUV with a modest amount of power, yet your opinion is to buy a 200hp powered hatchback because you got fed up with the lack of oomph of your original choice.

This tells me to ignore your opinion as you freely admit to making such drastically inept choices.

We had a small turbo car which spent most of its days doing school runs and short hops.  Within a year the turbo actuator failed due to lack of use.  Thankfully the four figure repair was done under warranty.

We now avoid turbos as its a cost we would rather avoid.

Any car is going to suffer from such harsh usage - give the poor thing a proper run every now and then!

(Even better - walk the kids to school)
