ok, so if it costs in the region of 5.5-8p per hour to run these things, how does that compare approx to running regular central heating throughout the house, or to running a typical gas fireplace if just warming front room?
anyone know what the rough figures are on whats optimal costwise?0 -
They cost 2 to 3 times more than gas depending on the efficiency of the gas appliance.
Central heating is the most efficient gas heating, but of course heats up a larger area. These are ok for smallish closed areas, opening doors to unheated areas causes draughts and discomfort.
Total cost of either depends on how big the space you are heating and the outside temp. The heat loss from your house is directly proportional to the temperature difference between inside and out, as is the cost.ac's lovechild0 -
so norm how did that happen?
did you have something covering it?
don't understand how it could cause blackened paint, and i hope you've demanded compensation if they've ruined the room
No, nothing covering - just put it in a clear space in the middle of the garage and switched on. It was smoking within minutes, we had to disconnect the power and wait for it to cool down. Something was wrong with the coating on the radiator, my husand thinks maybe they used the wrong paint but I can't see how that would have happened to only one radiator in a batch. The smoke was really thick and plasticky smelling.
The main thing is that no harm was done - the whole point of buying this type of heater was to be able to leave it safely unattended, provided the kids didn't touch it. It was frightening to think of what could have happened, and I would have liked some explanation from e buyer, but the smell has gone now and no-one got hurt. Needless to say I asked for a refund rather than replacements!0 -
Sounds more like the thermostat failed to me.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

ah cheers norm, thought you meant it was the paint in the room had all melted.
hmm let's hope ebuyer haven't got a dodgy batch then! lol
got my mum one for when she's in her potting shed in the garden!!0 -
Sounds like it had no oil in to me, I have 2 of the smaller ones, they are both OK.0

Sorry but can I ask how on Earth you had it upside down when there are wheels on the bottom?
Happiness is wanting what you have, not having what you want.
