Used car faulty - Partial repair cost

    Arr, well I'd return the car and say that based on the condition report that influenced your decision to purchase. So, either they repair or refund. I'd do this sooner rather than later. You purchased the car with a green tick for clutch which is not correct.

    Only an expensive inspection from somewhere independent would truly show whether the clutch was gone at the time of sale or not.

    As its 10 days then its the seller that would have to prove it was not inherently faulty. I'd wait to see the outcome of the OPs chat with the dealer. Hopefully the OP has not done many miles.

    It's a difficult position - you could reject the car and get the money back and go get another one - as it shows a green tick - and it's obviously not right - working it may be - but not working to spec. You could pay the £100 and keep it friendly - but you also don't know what quality of parts will be used for the job - and how long it'll last afterwards. They might be the kind of garage that does things properly - and so you'll have worry free motoring ahead - or they might be the kind of garage that fit the cheapest parts possible just to get  a car out of the door.

    What would you like to happen? Are you happy with the car otherwise?

    I'm just saying, if the dealer wanted to be a see-you-next-Tuesday, then he's got a lot in his favour.
    His inspection showed no fault, the test drive said no fault, 10 days has passed.
    There has to come a point it's reasonable to assume the fault has been caused by the owner, especially on an item that can be mis-used like a clutch.
    A steering rack (example) can't be mis-used, but a bad driver could reduce a brand new clutch to dust in 10 days if they wanted!

    If it were me, I'd get a quote from a local indy and if it was say, £250 or something pay them. Be more confident.
  • I raised the revving thing after the test drive, but thought it was me driving a new (petrol) car, but i officially contacted them after 5 days having driven it enough to realise it's goosed. I think I drove it on 4 occasions. I had to wait for an appointment for them to check the car. they have it now.

    I think because of the uncertainty of what my rights are, I'll just pay the money for the clutch. I really like the car other than the clutch and at this point I would pay £100 to see my stress level stay down. 

    I've had a look at clutches and it looks like they're getting me to pay for the part. 

    What would you guys do in this situation? Would you ask for more details on what clutch they intend to fit? Ask for part receipts?

    I would certainly question why you are paying anything, and push for it.

    Ask them to contact you when it is striped to look at the whole assy and see which parts they are replacing ,if they are cutting corners then you can stand and argue your corner to get the car done right.
