It's so that they can log into the 'check my driving licence' service as you, to check you before they let you test drive.CardinalWolsey said:Are they asking for NI numbers or driving licence number (albeit an alphanumeric code)? The only reason I can think they would want your NI number is to run credit checks.
It is much better if you log in yourself and generate a check code.
I posted the links to do this, further up the thread.1 -
I've just started looking at cars and was told if I wanted to do a test drive, all I would need was my drivers licence and NI number..0

So they can check for points and bans at https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence - if you don't want to give them your NI number, generate a check code at that site yourself.Polly05 said:I've just started looking at cars and was told if I wanted to do a test drive, all I would need was my drivers licence and NI number..0 -
Last week BMW dealership in Inverness required NI number before test drive. This weekend BMW dealership in Aberdeen did not require it.
Audi dealership in Aberdeen imposed a £100 admin fee on me last week. Partner purchased from BMW dealership in Aberdeen (which is part of same company which includes Audi dealership) and was charged a £150 admin fee. I did query why their Audi colleagues, practically next door only charge £100 admin fee but did not get a satisfactory answer. At the end of the day the price to change was all that mattered so beat them down a bit more.0 -
Had a test drive in a Jag last week and only supplied my driving licence and a Utility Bill.

I changed my car in January, apart from having paid a £100 deposit in December all I paid on collection was the balance. No request for sight of Driving Licence or NI Number. Having alreadty arranged insurance they even taxed it for me and just added the cost onto the bill.

Yup but did you take one of their cars for a test drive? Assuming not they wouldn't have any need to check your driving licence.Grey_Critic said:I changed my car in January, apart from having paid a £100 deposit in December all I paid on collection was the balance.
