If you press them on it, then the £99 fee is optional and they should waive it.

I'm not sure they need to prove you have a clean license unless it's part of a lease condition? I've never been asked about driving eligibility when buying cars. If they really need to know, then give them the DVLA access code.
I would not be leasing the car, I'd be buying it. This is my first time I have bought from a dealership, I previously bought my cars from adverts on gumtree or Loot.

You don't have to share your NI number.  And it's naughty/illegal of the dealer to ask for it.

Or possibly just sheer ignorance.  I didn't know about this when I went to test drive a few years back and the salesdroid wouldn't continue and couldn't explain why she needed my NI number other than "for the insurance".  I had to ask here to get an explanation.   I didn't get the test drive, they didn't get a sale or indeed any further business on the existing car.  Next time, I'll just do the code before I set off.
I need to think of something new here...
  • Are they asking for NI numbers or driving licence number (albeit an alphanumeric code)? The only reason I can think they would want your NI number is to run credit checks.

I've never been asked for my NI number when buying or leasing any car or motorbike, ever.
I have used the £99 deposit thing before and, yes, the £99 is deducted from the purchase price.

Don't need NI for credit checks.

    Name & address does that.

When I bought last year I was asked for my NI number at the showroom.

I told them I had no idea what it was  and he went away ' to check'.

He came back and said it would be okay and processed the sale.

I agree. HMRC is a totally different dept from DVLA. As we all know two different depts of any council NEVER communicate in a professional way, but 'friends' in those depts DO actually talk 'shop' :-0 .

They are wanting both, surely my driving license (albeit a paper one, as I was NEVER consulted if I wanted a credit card type digital one, as well as being charged for it), with comms to DVLA as a dealership would 'prove' what is on my license, regarding points or whether I was 'banned' from driving.

NI number are ONLY used in comms with HMRC and with a new employer, the gov website states this.
