  • High5 every one,

    now then,
wmb194   I find I have to answer an anoying call every time I use internet Banking because I only use Lloyds once a week or so. Card readers are good in part because the running cost is zero where as an obnoxious call by it's nature has to cost some thing.

eskbanker  some good text there. Apps to authenticate are a top idea in so far as they go. As long as you get the correct one.

born_again I have no problem with your remark quote of the day. By comparison, as I see it phone scams are the most common and easiest to carry out. Who ever heard of a card reader scam. App scams I'd have my doubts, as long as you get the app from the bank's own website.

jimjames  give me a windows 10 App for my laptop from the Bank's own website and I'll gladly use it.

Every one that I see it Banks in general are paranoid about users of internet banking because so many people use hand held devices running older versions of android. Version 11 is starting to happen, but as on Currys website, I see a lot of tablets/ mobile phones on offer with I believe version 7. As I understand it Android is not a (meant to be) paid for O.S. so the money is not there to pay for the same amount of updates that Windows and Apple receive. In normal times a hand held device is easy to loose some where, possibly unlocked allowing any lucky person to 'have their birthday'

Biometric Authentication is a top idea, Lloyds did have 'my voice is my pass word' but it looks to have gone quiet

A change to Android 11 does not immediately mean 10 becomes out of date. 11 may have new useful features but all security updates can be backported to 10 so both systems are as secure as each other.
Also Android is Google's baby. You cannot seriously suggest that they don't have the money to keep things up to date?

I use Lloyds online banking once a month and never have to authenticate unless I've accidentally cleared the cookies, or upgraded the OS or computer.

Card readers have an initial cost, which will cover a lot of automated calls at the bulk rates the banks can get.

  • Eco_Miser  this 'I use Lloyds online banking once a month and never have to authenticate unless I've accidentally cleared the cookies, or upgraded the OS or computer.' is amazing, surely you don't have the computer allways 100% on. The I.P. address used to connect to the internet is temporary, so when it changes Lloyds will see a 'new' device
  • kaMelo   ref 'A change to Android 11 does not immediately mean 10 becomes out of date' yes 100% but the newer o.s. will be priority. Costs have to be controlled. My knowledge is more m.s. it costs money to support legacy operating systems that might only run on older devices that can't  run the newer o.s.

No, I don't keep the computer on 24/7, nor the router, but unless Virgin Media resegment their local network, I always get the same IP address (I presume, I've not checked it recently). Their DHCP lease duration is several days, so on boot up I get the same address back, and the lease duration re-set.

Apart from that, as eskbanker says, it's the cookies that help identify me, and I suspect a script takes a look around the hardware to confirm it's a known device.

  • I've been trying at different times to phone Lloyds CS so as to 'stay safe' so I can get advise on how to change internet banking log in options as per the advise here, all ways the same estimated hour long wait. aren't parents taxiing their little oik/s home at that time!!!
Yes my phone deal might well include unlimited minutes, but it is not for the likes of Lloyds to abuse because an hour of my time to sit on my jacksie, £15 in advance no arguement.
