Practicalities of living in an AirBnB between house moves

I've accepted an offer on my house with a settlement date of end of May and have had an offer accepted on a house where we move in at the end of July (the sellers are moving to a new build that isn't ready so insisted on a later moving date).  This obviously leaves a two month gap.  After discounting living with family due to a combination of location and shielding issues, our options are rent somewhere or take an AirBnB for a couple of months.

We are erring towards an AirBnB for a variety of reasons, i.e. less hassle in terms of making sure things are up and running quickly, e.g. internet especially since we are working from home, it isn't actually that much more expensive totting up the bills, etc.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of this and have any tips of the practicalities regarding living in a AirBnB?  Any issues in terms of not having a fixed abode, e.g. for ID purposes?  Do you need to get things like contents insurance in place, given when normally when you stay in an AirBnB travel insurance covers things like that?

Cheers

  • Hi,

I had to do this last year after plans were cancelled due to the pandemic and I had nowhere to live for a period of 2-3 months. I ended up moving around a lot, so stayed in several AirBnBs during this period which isn't really advisable! However, it was (for the most part) enjoyable. I got to see different places and even if there were issues, was aware it was only for the short term.

I used my mum's address for mail and was able to get some mail sent to the AirBnBs. I didn't have contents insurance so can't comment on that. I imagine if you have all your possessions with you, it might be worth considering but it may be that AirBnB covers this, so worth looking into. Just a side note though, their customer service is pretty shoddy. Good luck!

Airbnb does monthly rentals now so maybe try that and just leave a mail forward on. If you have a completion date then you plan around that.

I'm temporarily living at my boyfriend's house while our purchase completes. I haven't changed my address on anything that will affect my credit rating, because another two moves in a short space of time will. I check most things online anyway, and I've set up a Royal Mail post redirection so I don't miss anything important. My ID still has my old address on, but as we started the process when I was living there I've not had to change it. You can always use your passport anyway. And any solicitor documents I collect and return in person. Five weeks in and no problems so far.
Are you taking all your belongings, or putting some in storage? Most of mine are in storage, and the insurance is covered by that provider. Travel insurance won't cover you as it's not travel and you'd likely exceed the maximum stay, and I'm not sure on contents cover - it might possibly be classed as renting, but you'd need to check with the provider.
