Selling a car from home.
Hello.
My dad is 80 and has a Astra car that is 10 years old and has done less than 24,000 miles.
He has been shielding for months but his eyesight has got worse and he now is waiting for a Cataract op which has been put back(like 1,000's of other people) from last year to mid Summer now.
The eye doc has told him to not to drive until after the op and see if the op has worked but he has decided to give up driving and the car.
He has called the dealership that he bought the car from and has had the serviced and MOT for 10 years to see if they would buy it but he was told that he will have to drive the car there. He called 2 other local car places but they said the same.
Does anybody know of any companies/dealerships that will go to peoples homes to look at the car and buy the car?
He doesn't want to advertise the car for sale online or elsewhere as he doesn't want people coming to the house as he lives on his own.
He doesn't have anybody to take the car to a car place to sell and my partner an i are do not live that near to him do this for him. He has asked a few of his mates if they know anybody that wants to buy the car but there were no takers.
Any advise on what firms to use would be helpful.

Any of the garages should be able to organise transport easily enough, if they wanted to. How local are they?
Are none of his friends or neighbours willing to help him out? I certainly would for anybody local to me.
Given he's been shielding for months, is he in contact with a local support network of some kind?0 -
Try Motorway - the cars are bid on by dealers and the winning dealer will come and collect (or arrange a transport company to collect)0

Where does your father live?
I sold a car recently to a dealer. He came viewed the car, paid by bank transfer and collected the car. Dealers may not want a ten year old Astra.
I would suggest you contact one of the many online companies who offer to buy a car for cash, some will come to your home.
For a small fee, my local car auction would be happy to collect and sell any vehicle."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

If the dealer he bought from was a new car dealership then it would probably be unlikely they'd be interested in a 10 year old car. Probably better to contact smaller local dealers who would be more interested in that age and mileage car. I know a few local to me that would jump at a low owner 24k mile car so I imagine there are similar in most areas.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0

As another said, try motorway - they do all that stuff.
Good luck.0 -
Good post and if I may add - please check the reviews online as some can be a pile of rubbish or worse. So go with one that is established and on the whole has good reviews and reviews for actually buying, not just being polite on the phone ie many reviews for many co's are not for what you are doing but intial contact etc and some are "invited" so they will be good.missile said:Where does your father live?

Stick an ad on Gumtree (free) or Autotrader (not free).

I think he called Thurlow/Nunn as that was the dealership he bought the car from or Motorbodies as it was 10 years ago. They told him due to COVID that they could not come to his house but he could drive it there and they will give him a price.

I tried them last night and the price quoted was £2,750 but they needed photo's of the car and details of any damage of which there is a tiny dent in the bonnet which was caused by work person doing a roof repair for his neighbour but never asked if they could use his driveway to put the ladders up and then dropped something on the car and never said anything and done the job and left. His neighbour over the road saw them do it and told my dad later but the phone number he gave to the one getting his roof done was disconnected as they were cold callers.rhino_horn said:Try Motorway - the cars are bid on by dealers and the winning dealer will come and collect (or arrange a transport company to collect)
I did not go any further with Motorway as i will have to make a time with my dad to be home so i can wash the car and take some photo's and then if he wants to go ahead make a time for Motorway to inspect the car.0
