eBay managed payments - now demanding photo ID

In common with PayPal, eBay have obligations to comply with Money Laundering Regulations- although I agree entirely that this process would be a lot smoother if they explained to people what they were doing and why they needed the information, rather than sending seemingly random requests1

What are you supposed to do if you dont have a passport or driving licence (which I dont hold due to a medical condition and I havent been abroad in many years so my passport is out of date. The only ID I have is a bus pass which is good enough to fly internally but does not have my dob on it.

I'm a non driver with no plans to travel abroad but I always make sure to have a current passport.
It's surprising just how many times I need it for ID each 10 year period. Definitely worth the cost.
As you say, it can be difficult without either.0 -

Yes I think the PL is valid for 10 years as well.
I've no plans to travel abroad and haven't in over 20 years, but I do have family abroad so a passport is best for me just in case.0 -
I got the e-mail to move to Managed Payments just before Easter. I had thought on reading this thread that if they insisted on Photo ID, that would be end of me selling on eBay. (Not a huge problem - I only occasionally want to get rid of things). I attached a bank account and that was it - though they did thank me for linking a "checking account".
So maybe volume of your sales is a possible trigger?I need to think of something new here...0 -

I have been with eBay since 2009.
This year I have received this demand for photo id and a bank statement.
The first demand was for a bank statement not older than 12 months. I submitted it. Then they rejected it and now demand for one not older than three months.
I used their service where I could add a bank account with a bank via logging in with it. The service said if I use it, then I will not need to submit a bank statement. It changed nothing. They still demand a bank statement for a bank account the website said I will not need to provide a bank statement.
I only sell something very rarely and, mostly, only things I have own. Mostly, used things.
The demand for photo id is very inflexible.
Don't know what to do.
All of this seems to me to be very excessive.
I am very rarely asked for photo id. Almost never. And I do not understand why I am asked for a photo id just to sell online rarely some things I have owned. This simply leaves me with no option but to bin them. If I sell something, I mostly sell to save the planet.
Now I cannot now sell anything on eBay even if I wanted.
I like ebay, but they make now them impossible to use because the payments section says that they payments are on hold. Although, the payments are zero.
I wonder if there are alternatives to eBay?0 -
I've been an ebay member for over 20 years & recently ran into a problem with being asked for documents to verify my identity. I did post about it on here in case anybody could advise, which they couldn't. In the end after a lot of phone calls & messages between us, I just told ebay it was impossible for me to supply photo id because I didn't possess a driving licence or passport (apart from an expired one).
The eventual decision was made to refer the issue to 'back office' & they finally accepted that the multitude of documents I'd supplied to them, consisting of energy bills, birth certificate, marriage certificate etc. would be accepted in my case.
So my advice to you is to persevere & point out to them that there must be thousands of ebay members who are unable to supply photo id, which is something I mentioned to them. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0
