Options
I am looking for a new printer. I have a Canon at the moment, find it very slow. Any reccy's I need a 3 or 4 in one that stores the paper inside. needs to be easy to set up, I am not really computer literate.

How much printing do you do?
    How much colour?
    Photos?
    What size A4,A3?
Do you need document feed scanning?
    Duplex printing?
    Duplex scanning?
    WiFi?

What model  is the current printer?
    Has it always been slow?
Is it just the printing that's slow?

     budget?

In reality, how much are you printing that speed becomes an issue?

We don't often see speed in printing coming up as an issue. More often it's economy of ink cartridges.
The default answers are often laserjet business printers (like Brother) and compatible cartridges. Lots of common domestic printers are a bit mechanically shoddy and require overpriced cartridges whose prices soon dwarf the cost of the actual machine.
Kind of like "buy cheap, buy twice", but more realistically "buy cheap, buy ten times".

PCPRO has just reviewed printers and this came out top. CANON TS8350.  It was available for £120 from Argos, now I cannot see it for less than £160.  Printers appear to be (still) in short supply.
If I had to buy a printer now (with a tray) I'd go for an HP with Instant Ink available for about £60 but some may consider that to be "buying cheap".
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

    Store paper inside ??
Epson multifunction range for basic home use .circa £45 .
  • My printer is a Canon and I hate the thing, it takes ages to start up. I have had problems with it ever since I bought it, but it was all I could afford at the time. My techie set it up for me.
I do quite a lot of printing both black and white and colour, B&W mostly. A4 Colour and B&W mostly photos some A4 some smaller depending on what I want them for. I also do quite a bit of scanning. I would prefer one that has an internal paper feed. I have to take the paper out each time I have used it and then have to reset the printer. when I come to use it again. Do not like to see the paper rest against the wall

if printing regularly then it is often better to leave them switched on.

If ink is it doing a clean cycle because it got switched off?
laser need a bit of time to heat up when not in use for a while.

We had a canon printer for years that we had a lot of trouble connecting to.  We rarely print, but do need to at times with my wife’s course and junior’s home schooling.   I recently bought an HP printer and it has been amazingly simple. It connects to the WiFi network and connects to your devices on its own.  I also signed up to the instant ink refills at £3 a month (I think).  The printer orders new cartridges itself when low.  Compared to the frustration we had with the old printer, this has been a dream.

    I agree with this ^^^^

The only thing I would add is if you want a non-photo printer, go for a small office machine if you have the space.

HP's OfficeJet machines are not that more expensive than their home machines and are generally more capable and have more features.   Although my printer has 4 cartridges, the Instant Ink service covers these without additional cost.

I found more cost effective to use b/w laser and on the few occasions need colour printing to go to Tesco.
