Problems installing Broadband

Options
I am having real problems getting my new sky broadband connected and I am really hoping someone could help me please.

I have installed the broadband disc onto pc and cant get a connection from the telephone socket in the bedroom which is where I have the PC set up. I can only obtain a connection from the main socket downstairs in the lounge.

Ok - here is what I have done...

I have 3 sockets in the house, one telephone line, the main box coming into the house and has sky and the dowstairs telephone plugged in - I have put one of the filters I received onto this socket. I have another box in bedroom 1 which has a filter fitted also and the bedroom telephone (I have tried this unplugged too), and the 3rd socket is in bedroom 2 which I have the broadband connected usually - this also has a filter on it. I have tried to just operate with one filter on the Bedroom 2 socket to see if this helps - but it doesnt...

I have been on the phone to sky numerous times - and they are now saying I will get an emergency telephone call within 3 days!!!..

I can't understand why I can get a connection downstairs, but not upstairs when its all the same line!. I have had line checks etc etc from Sky, and have read the help booklet many times - and have done everthing that suggested - for example swap the filters round - reset the router...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have also posted this on the Techie Board - I wasn't sure which area would be most suitable.
Thank you
HoneyPie

Hi, Hope I can help a bit.
The reason you can't get a connection upstairs is almost certainly down to your extension wiring.
Don't worry a lot of people have the same problem. The reason is that their is additional connections in extensions which were put is for the now redundant bell circuit.
These wires have the effect of introducing noise onto the line killing the broadband signal.
To fix the problem you will have to get out a screwdriver and a small pair of pliers to remove the offending wires. You only need the wires to pins 2 and 5 connected.
You will need to do this at your master socket and also at the extensions.
Have a look at this link and it should all become clear.

A good place to go for help with Sky Broadband is www.skyuser.co.uk.

PS Have you a black router or a white one?

  • Thank you very much for your reply and advice Penrhyn.

I will have a look at those wires tonight, and see if I can make sense of it - I hope it works - am lost without access...

The router sky have sent me is black - and I am using the ethernet lead (thats yellow), not wireless..

    Thanks again..

The additional wiring mentioned in post #2 will not prevent ADSL working. Removing the redundant bell wiring can sometimes improve SNR and therefore your speed but it is more likely that your extension wiring is incorrectly wired or your upstairs socket is filtered by a filter downstairs.

I can only go on my experience here. removing the bell wiring from my extensions, improved the noise margin on my connection by 6db. My neighbour who was also running of an extension could not get a connection at all and the wiring change fixed it.
I do take your point on filters though, friend of mine recently moved the computer and managed to wire the modem in after the filter, interestingly it did connect at dial up speed!
