I want to have a simple 4 column table in an Apache OpenOffice 4.1.7 document that I use to monitor my bank account. I don't want anything more complex than this very simple table.

First column is the name of the credit or debit plus the date it will be applied.

Second column is for the £credit amount.

Third column is for the £debit amount.

Fourth column is the running total.

How do I format the fourth column table so that the running total is automatically calculated?

Here is an image of the table. I currently manually calculate the running total.

Thanks

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

If the cell containing the word 'Balance' is in CELL A2 then enter the following formula in CELL D2

    =SUM($B$2:B2) - SUM($C$2:C2)

You can then copy and paste that formula down the fourth column and it will show the running balance for you.

Thanks moneysavinghero but that doesn't work. It just show the pasted formula.

I've tried it in an OpenOffice spreadsheet and it doesn't work there either.

What might I be doing wrong? It is decades since I worked on formulae in tables and spreadsheets.

When you type the formula into CELL D2 does it work there? Is it just when you copy it down the column that it doesn't work?

No, it doesn't work in cell D2.

Is that formula for Microsoft Word tables? I am using Apache OpenOffice.

Its a formula for Apache OpenOffice spreadsheet. I've tested it in OpenOffice and it works for me.

Sorry did not realise you were trying to do it in a OO Word Document table. Is there any reason you want to do it like this and not in a OO spreadsheet? Generally it's better to use the best tool for the job.

    Hi

    OPENING BALANCE

    IN

    OUT

    1776.00

    Gas

    0.0

    -12.34

    1763.66

    Water

    0

    -56.78

    1706.88

By giving the Debits a Minus value -12.34 then my simple formula is....
    =sum <B2>+<C2>+<D1>
    =sum <B3>+<C3>+<D2>

But is not very tolerant and probably is actually more elephant than elegant.
