David Wilson kitchen A2 Silver Spec

Hi all, have searched forum before posting and don’t see anything right on topic for what I’m after however have just purchased (and moved into) a new David Wilson home. We decided not to upgrade kitchens as were told it would basically include integrated appliances so opted for ‘standard’. Issue I have is that we saw the kitchen the day before completion and thought it wasn’t actually finished, no end panels on cupboards so carcass colour is visible contrasting the standard door we chose. Plinths are also same colour at carcass and not doors, the site manager seemed to hint to me that it didnt look finished and surely if these were standard he would’ve seen before, sales said it is like this if not upgraded but surely not! Anyone had a standard kitchen whereby carcasses are on show?

It looks nice to me. I like a little contrast.  Perhaps you could offer to pay extra for the end panels (find model and pay for them privately) but it still looks really nice to me as it is.

Thanks Dean appreciate the comments, we aren’t that stuck on it and have done exactly that contact the suppliers to allow us to get a price, it’s just stuck in my throat a little bit that I honestly think they have made a booboo. I would imagine quite often people don’t pay the extra for the upgrade so the site foreman would probably have seen it a lot and it was his reaction that spooked me. Would just like to know for sure, maybe I ask for the kitchen spec drawings and see what I get

My post disappeared.   Probably a good thing.

The plinths being that colour is trying to fool you that it's a design choice that the sides and plinth match, when it was actually a cost saving choice.  You've got no cornice or pelmet either, more cost saving, but side panels are disproportionately expensive to the cost of the rest of the kitchen, so it's definitely deliberate.   It looks fine, but it's not how most kitchen companies would design unless you were telling them you're on a tight budget.

If people are trying to make you think that an outdoor tap, a bit of grass and anything other than pedestal sinks are 'extras' then you really should think about what 'standard' is.

These people charge a premium for distinctly ordinary and get government subsidies, get to pretend that they're for you, but really it's for their shareholders.

  • Could they have already started installing the kitchen when you chose the doors and they’ve just carried on? I can’t see how an end panel could be added between the oven and cupboard without replacing the side of the oven unit as there wouldn’t be space for the door to open if it were retrofitted unless there is a space that I can’t see in the photo?

Doozergirl the upgrade cost wasn’t the key factor but more the fact what we were told you get for that cost integrated appliances only which didn’t justify fee, units would be same was said.

nikkilou yes you’re correct to retrofit an end panel in that space would require the ovens and units to be shifted left as carcass is hardup against worktop.

But no the door choices were made several months before kitchen started going in, sorry
  • Is there a show home? Although I guess that would have the upgraded kitchen so may not help, unless they have a section with all the cupboard/door choices laid out to chose from?

Any friendly neighbours you could ask? If someone has the same spec kitchen as you’ve chosen what does theirs look like?

Is the development still in early stages or has it been going on long enough for any re sales - a look at rightmove sold prices could maybe give you an indication.

If it’s wrong they should be sorting it whether you’ve gone for the standard kitchen or not. Personally I hate integrated washing machines and took mine out in my current house for a high capacity freestanding one so you definitely aren’t the only people that would have gone for the standard option.

I'm not criticising you, I'm criticising them.    You pay a lot of money for a brand new house and their marketing screams premium product.  Where's bronze?   Silver suggests a particular standard.

    I don't think they've made a mistake.  That's your kitchen.

We have a David Wilson standard spec kitchen and the ends don't match the doors. It isn't quite so noticeable on ours though because we have gloss cream doors and white carcass.
