Hi, my win 10 pc isnt working properly. I'm getting timed out sometimes when opening links in chrome (but sometimes they do open). Also malwarebytes is not updating so i can't perform a scan. I ran a CCLEANER scan (activated the pro version trial also) which took a while to update but eventually ran the scan. Windows security is telling me "virus & threat protection" needs updating but it won't update when i try and select it.
I've ran a speedtest (ookla) and i have 36mbps connection.
Any ideas what it could be? I'm not sure win10 has last known good configuration so i can't try that?
Thanks

1. has anything changed recently eg have you installed anything new ?
2. look at task manager - what % cpu, memory etc. does any program seem to be using resources heavily.
3. how long has the problem been going on1 -

1. The only two things i've installed are chrome extensions. Auto refresh (installed 7/8 weeks ago). Session buddy (installed 3 weeks ago)
2. Strangely it wont open task manager (when i press ctrl-alt-delete) it gives me the list but when i select task manager nothing happens
3. I've only really noticed it happening from yesterday

Is Windows 10 in the middle of an update, wife's laptop went all glitchy the other day and the cause was an update to 20H2 trying to run, had to restart about 3 or 4 times but got there in the end, now working okay again.1

malwarebytes not updating, task manager not opening, slow browsing - probably something on your pc that shouldnt be there.
uninstall the chrome extensions. google what to do if task manager wont open. try and get a virus scan of your pc but beware fake sites offering to do this.
dont plug in any backup media you already have. do not !
use a clean usb drive and copy off anything you need to keep. dont plug this into any other pc.
until you can get task manager running and malwarebytes working treat your pc as if it had covid...1 -

In task manager its showing google chrome (9) even though i don't have 9 tabs open? With a memory usage of 344.mb, does that seem high?
I've unistalled the chrome extensions now, i only have add blocker running (which has been on the computer for ages).
What can i use as a virus scan, any suggestions please?
I don't have any back up media and i'll check what i need to copy from the PC but im not sure if anything is that important on here to be honest.

Similarly to run a AV scan, type virus in search, click Virus and threat protection and run a quick scan.If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.1 -

Similarly to run a AV scan, type virus in search, click Virus and threat protection and run a quick scan.
Initially it said there were no updates, but when i checked for updates it said error encountered and this message:
"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80080005)"
Virus and protection quick scan found 0 threats. But it also said protection definitions are out of date. When i tried to update it searched then said protection definition update failed Error code: 21470248640 -
if you truely dont have much on there that you need, go to settings / update and security / reset this pc.1

Also, is backing up anything i do have to google drive ok? Or do you recommend only doing it via USB drive...
