Wonder if anyone has ever encountered this? I work for a small manufacturing company 8 employees, all minimum wage work, minimum holiday entitlement, no real perks but it pays the bills.
The problem is my co workers don’t take annual leave, they work and then the boss pays them at the end of the year. They don’t want leave, have no interest in leave. The problem is this me looks bad and if I am looking time off it’s a real pain in the !!!!!! and the boss makes you feel guilty for doing so and asks why etc when it’s really none of his business.
Certain holidays are set such as two days at Easter, but my coworkers ask the boss can they work, again this all makes me and another guy look bad as we always want our holidays, not only that you can’t even enjoy your holidays because you know when you go back you’ll have a mountain of work to catch up on.
I just can’t understand the mindset of people who don’t want holidays and prefer to work, these guys have mortgages and cars all paid off, have no real outgoings, it’s almost like they don’t want to be at home.
Have you ever encountered this?

Yes, I don't particularly like taking holidays. I have the public holidays off as I have no option but take very little other holiday. Took none at all last year apart from PHs as I did the previous year. I don't get paid for the holidays I don't take.0

I'm like that too. I think there's a term for it but In general terms I get very unhappy if I don't have something to do and end up crawling walls, ignoring money side entirely it can be hell unless I have something really distracting on the agenda.
It's a personal choice, you shouldn't feel guilty about taking holiday your entitled to - and I don't feel badly against anyone whio does take theirs, so your boss is wrong to make you feel that way.

Take your holiday if you want to, it's your right and if you get the impression they feel you shouldn't then stuff them.
Whilst I have literally to be coerced by management to take holidays on the few occasions I do, I somewhat hypocritically recognise and totally fight the corner that there are really good reasons (even from the managements view) for getting people to take these breaks.
Don't feel bad about it, you are legally entitled to them.1 -

Paying for unused statutory holiday pay is not legal.6 -

I'm guessing these guys have unhappy or unfulfilling home lives for one reason or another. If they live alone I can understand why being with mates at work is preferable to sitting at home on your own. Not everybody wants to take up a hobby to fill their time.Irrespective of that, the OP is entitled by law to a minimum of 28 days holiday per year (including BH) and there is no reason to feel guilty about taking them. As for there being a pile of work on return, just plough through it in the normal way, don't rush it. Excess workload is a problem for the bosses to resolve.I actually worked with a guy who refused to take the morning and afternoon breaks, had short lunch breaks, and worked additional hours without wanting to be paid overtime. We had a new office manager arrive who insisted that all staff take proper breaks and he went ballistic about it. There is no getting into some people's minds.7

Not taking holidays can sometimes be seen as suspicious. The employee may be up to something dodgy and doesn't want to take time off in case their activities are discovered. In the financial services sector, holidays are mandatory as part of anti-fraud measures. It can also be a sign of a micro-manager not trusting other staff or someone with stress problems.

Management level.
When my Manager who was in both of these categories, went on maternity leave in a past job, I snooped a look over past years' yearly planners and just saw 2 weeks holiday in any one year for the person.
In the same company, there were two occasions I ended up having to cancel days off (and no I am not quite a person who would ordinally do this) - because no body else could do the work at the time and it was as if I was cursed as there was always problems in the lead up to being away.
I came across a wow job yesterday - 25 days basic hols + 8 bank holidays! salary 21k 9-5 job office work but with a bit of cleaning!0
