Any ideas what this is - small black box in car near fuse box

I've recently bought a used car, I've unsuccesfully tried to hard wire a dash cam (see my other thread!) and struggled to loosen the earth bolt due to a little black box being in the way as it's such a tight squeeze up near the fuse box (near the engine but inside the car) - I removed the device and it looks like it's an after market add on as the black cable is really thick compared to all the other wires coming from the car. I've googled the numbers on it, nothing obvious as to what it might be from that. I google image searched car insurance black boxes and they seem much larger - this is around 4cm x 3cm. The arrow points towards the front of the car when it's screwed in place.

  • The dialling code is apparently Lancashire but nothing comes up on Google, I tried scanning the QR code in situ and also from the photo once uploaded here but it doesn't recognise it as a QR code. It's a mystery...

Could it be a GPS receiver?

For some kind of tracker you mean? It's not a fancy car so that does seem unlikely, although it did do very high mileage in it's first year - around 21k so may have been some kind of company pool car.

QR code scans as 6258942727071. So, not much use.
Personally, I think it's one of those insurance telematic black boxes. If so it's now redundant.

When I google imaged the insurance black boxes they were much larger, 4 times the size at least.

    was it connected to anything?
  • was it connected to anything?
To be honest there were so many wires I didn't really look to trace it back to anything, I unscrewed it so I could access the earth bolt and took a pic so I could google it but nothing came up in the searches. My dashcam isn't working properly when connected to the hardwire kit so I'll have to fiddle around with it again so will try and work out if it's connected somewhere.
