Has anyone done this? I'm paying a ridiculous price for BT landline and broadband. I hardly use the landline 'phone so looking at cheaper options.

Lots of posts on here regarding using mobile dongle for internet .
You don't need to use the phone component of your BT service .
Landline is essentially the data line that broadband travels down .

You need a way to get broadband into your home, either by a landline, an optical fibre or via the mobile phone service (4g). There's also the possibility of satellites but that's quite a bit more expensive.

You don't have to use the phone but all providers will have a line rental component in their charges - some are more up front about them than others but generally you get some calls chucked in (usually weekend and evening) although you may be able opt out and then pay silly prices for any calls. Just contact you provider and request to delete phone calls but you may find that there's not a lot of difference.

Most of the fibre providers will offer phone service as an optional extra as phone calls have to be carried over the broadband service as VoIP.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of saving would you expect to get, if the ‘line’ only delivered broadband rather than a phone service and broadband ....a typical monthly price is £28 for both , but only the naive would think that breaks down as £20 line rental ( therefore the phone service ) so it follows that  if only broadband it would be £8 a month.
There are company’s that do offer broadband over a landline ( copper pair or fibre ) without the phone service , but the price difference is negligible, or £1 or £2 a month saving at best.

Not forgetting the WISP services :)
We use Airband ... and we also have a landline which we use to speak to people with. :D

You have to live in the right place to get a WISP service as it's not generally available.

There was a service where I live for a couple of years or so but it then, got taken down when OR installed FTTP and they lost most of their subscribers.

Assuming you still want your broadband through the copper wire, it's Oonly possible with VM, though the no landline saving is fairly minimal.
However you could make a big saving by leaving BT and switching to a more competitive provider: maybe Plusnet if you want to remain within the BT empire. Plenty of providers offer a landline on 'line rental only' terms, with no inclusive calls.

It’s not true to say you have to have landline phone service included over Openreach anymore , there are providers that offer SoGEA , an Openreach product that provides  broadband without a phone service, over OR local loops , but the saving compared to the same company’s phone and broadband over the same local loop is small.

We have fibre to the house, so don't need the landline. I've made repeated calls to BT, and we're not allowed to ditch the landline, it's all "part of the package" apparently. So, I've made a complaint to BT:
We have a Fibre 2 Broadband Package. As part of the package, we have a telephone line. The line rental for the phone line appears to be £19.99 per month, although it depends upon who you talk to at BT.
I have said that we don't require the telephone line and don't want to pay for it, and have asked that it is removed from our package.
However, we have been told that this isn't possible. Technically, I think it is possible (the broadband is on fibre, the telephone line is on copper), and this is an administrative decision.
My complaint is that we should not be paying for a bundled service that we don't require.
I can envisage a complaint to Ofcom at some point in the future!

erm last time I read the line rental was merged with broadband and is no longer a thing. So when you sign up its one package and there no mention of line rental as a separate charge in the bill.
