Vegan Mince Pies

  • Argh! Mr Kippling fruit mince pies aren't vegan this year! So we bought "Walkers" instead, we had one last night and they tasted yummy, sugary, "buttery" and hubby gave the thumbs up. Unfortunately, they weren't that cheap at A$5 for half-a-dozen. We might try Aldi for a cheaper alternative, I think they were vegan...
  • I've always just made my own (usually with Morrisons The Best jars of mincemeat, which use a vegetable suet) since going vegan. Where did you buy the Walkers ones khity? Must try those...

Dammit! Normally so reliable... I haven't had the mince pie cravings yet this year, but I did pick up a pack of Mr Kiplings "Winter Warmer Lattice Tarts" which are vegan, christmassy and very yummy. Flavours like "apple and cinnamon"...

  • Thanks for this thread. I've got some vegans coming round for a play date type thing and was going to make some with my own mincemeat but then realised I can't guarantee the alcohol I used is vegan. Also I haven't tried making my gluten free pastry without eggs so I'll check some of the sources mentioned.

Like others I generally make my own as they taste far superior to anything I've ever bought especially now I have found a fab gf pastry recipe it works out much tastier and cheaper than buying four free froms for £2 or so anywhere.

If you post what kind of alcohol you've used, some of us vegheads might be able to check. There's a guide that the Vegan Society puts out, called The Animal Friendly Shopper, and they have a section on alcohol/liquor, etc.

Not sure if marzipan is normal or not, I don't remember it from when I was a kid, but boy, it's a great addition. :P

As I'm not a vegan I can't really answer that in terms of Vegan mince pies. I am trying to shop for a Christmas dinner so our vegan guest can eat as much of the food as everyone else rather than have a different meal sitting the corner for the "wierdo".

    Great answer!! :D

It's entirely down to the vegan/ veggie in question. Personally I eat quorn mince, chicken etc, and veggie bacon rashers. Mainly because they fit in meal wise with the things my partner/ family/ friends are eating, and therefore less trouble for all involved.

I LOVE, love, love, love nut roast, tofu, pulses, beans etc also though, and will eat these whenever possible as well.

But talking about why veggies want to eat veggie versions of meat dishes - you know what really annoys me? When there are two versions of meals available, one veggie, one meat.. the damn meat eaters ALWAYS come back for second helpings and take the veggie stuff!!!
The only thing we know for sure, is that we know nothing
