That's a bit of a strong statement... I'm vegan because a) I think milk and eggs are mean and b) I've gone off meat. The last thing I want is something that emulates something I've gone off! Bring on the chickpeas!
I have been vegan for 13 years and i think it is nice that vegans can now get what most people eat, it used to be so hard to get anything pre made. I hate mince pies :D but i think the co-op are the best and can be trusted. H&B do some but think they are a bit pricey.
I dont buy much pre prepared stuff as i love baking cakes and making things from scratch but a lot of new vegans can find it hard to totally change there cooking style over night so pre prepared food is a great way to introduce someone into a vegan lifestyle.

Well thank you for all the comments.

Co-Op fairtrade fruit mince pies at £1.35 remain significantly the cheapest available that I have found, beating the prices in Budgens, Morrisons, Asda, Tesco, Waitrose and hands-down the expensive nonsense from Sainsbury and Holland and Barratt.

I'm not used to posting in this area of the MoneySavingExpert forum and I'm more used to just sticking to money saving as a topic. I hope no one is offended by my search for the shop bought vegan cheapest mince pies available. I know I couldn't buy the ingredients to make 6 vegan mince pies for less money.

It's a particularly strong statement when used in reference to mince pies, which are very commonly vegan anyway!

As explained above, manufacturers are now starting to use more animal-sourced products in their pastry, but you used to be able to pick up any Tescos or Mr Kiplings... so it's hardly a "vegan version of something normal people eat"!!

Well the vast majority of mince pies I have found are NOT vegan - they are still vegetarian, yes, but most of the pastry has some kind of animal product in it usually egg and/or milk and I don't recall in the past this being the case. Mr Kiplings are certainly not and I can't remember them ever being, and most of the varieties at Tesco that I can remember have never been vegan.
  • I bought a box of 12 from Lidl a few weeks ago (that are vegan), but when I went back yesterday to check the price they were out of stock.

Almost certain it was under £2, though :-)

    Thank you Badger_Lady!

The only mince pies I have seen in Lidl were NOT vegan. Can you remember what the brand name was? - but as you say there is a good chance that they're all sold out now.

    Cheers!

Ah - I'm pretty sure it was these: http://www.mincepieclub.co.uk/Reviews/Mince_Pie_Reviews_2007/Reviews_2007_-_Round_10_-_Lyons_Shortcrust_Mince_Pies_12_for_%C2%A31.35.html

12 Lyons mince pies for £1.35!

Can't find a full list of ingredients online, but according to the Vegan Forum: http://www.veganforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16747
I just threw together a Lyons mince pie (vegan-friendly baby! damn you somerfield!) and some mocha ripple swedish glace

Thank you! I will look out for this brand, but when I visited my nearest Lidl they only had different (non-vegan) pies in.
