How long do fresh turkey's last?, if i buy a fresh Aldi crown tomorrow
will it still be ok to eat on Christmas day?
I bought my fresh crown (at Aldi's) on the 21st and the use by date was indeed the 27th. I opened it at 11am christmas morning and it almost knocked me out. The smell that flew out of the packaging was absolutely RANK. The sheer panic that hit me was immense as I had no time, or the inclination, to run around family/friends to cadge a big bird for the table as I was due to leave for my work at 4.30 that same fateful day. I raked around my freezer for a suitable replacement but as no one fancied pizza/fish/burger or even mince and all the trimmings we had to settle on sharing 4 chicken breasts between 6 hungry mouths. Sorry to moan, but has anyone else had a similar problem or did we get the 1 bad bird in the batch? Going 1st thing Sun morning to complain and I want at least my money back and probably more on top as some sort of recompense for them doing their best to ruin our day, even though not deliberately. Anyone any thoughts on what the very nice manager at Aldi should be offering me?

This happened to me with a Tesco turkey crown 2 years ago - well in date and the smell nearly knocked Mum and me out on Xmas Eve. I live quite close to Tesco so we took it back - one whiff and the guy on Customer services was nearly sick - but I only got my money back - sorry - but it's not just you!!!

  • I bought a fabulous frozen goose from Aldi for £14.99 which was well worth it and I would definately buy one again!!!! It fed 5 of us for 2 days and we have saved the goose fat for future roast potatoes - bargain!

We had our frozen turkey crown again this year for the third year running and it was beautiful.

Years ago my sister had a turkey that was off (not from Aldi though) and it ruined her christmas. This has always stuck in my mind and since then i always make sure my turkey is defrosted and prepared by first thing xmas eve...this way if it's off i've still got time to take it back/buy another.

I hope your christmas wasn't too badly spoiled

Snap! We also ended up with a totally rank Turkey from Aldi (very sadly though, we only discovered the smell when I was carving the joint and cut through some sort of utterly revolting tumour!!)
bluenose1972, I'd be really interested to hear how your complaint was resolved and whether you're considering writing a letter to Aldi headquarters as well ...
