So basically I'm just curious when i see handsets advertised at just under a grand, what better an experience do you enjoy?
This is an honest question and welcome the replies.
Some people see a phone as a status symbol (see also expensive watch/car/clothes/shoes etc)
Pays your money and takes your choice, I suppose
yes but if you put a protective cover on it its just a mobile phone.........nobody really cares except the i-sheep

They may well be called phones but these devices are computers in your hand and the phone is just another app on the screen. Some of the pictures these latest phones can take can hold up against a camera system that cost me around £1000 5 years ago. My style of photography lends more to investing in these phones than another separate camera system.

Like anything we buy we have to try and understand what our needs are and does the device meet them. If we can do that then we will be happy with whatever device we end up choosing.

Out of interest, if photos are high on your list when looking at phones what would be your top 3 phones?
It's just i am thinking like you, I love taking pics of high quality and think it would be great to have all I need in one gadget and not have to purchase a phone and a camera.
I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
    There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

I like what there doing with the different lens sizes on the one phone and how good there getting at night photography.

i don’t know enough about the android phones only to know that Samsung top end are excellent along with the iPhone.

I like a lot of wide angle photography so those wide angle lens are ideal for me. Telephoto lens could be doing with being longer but I think Samsung do some cool stuff in that regards.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Paid around a grand for it.....Still running fine, but, thinking about getting something else, 5G and dual sim. What I won't be doing is paying a grand+ again.
I understand the extra costs R&D, more expensive chips and components etc....But, still feel there is a large rip off cost, especially now you don't even get chargers and headsets with some of the premium phones.
Apart from the S-pen, I won't miss anything on it. I've analysed my use and the new Samsung A52 will be as far up the budget as I'm prepared to go. Sticking with Samsung as they are the only ones who are Guaranteeing 4 years of updates to their new phones. Besides, I like their phones...  ;):)

I originally bought the Galaxy S range because they had features and specs above most requirements. Now most budget phones
have good enough specs but there maybe something you miss.  I miss the Wireless Charging.. But I like the fact the battery
    lasts 3 or 4 days.

You would certainly be able to tell the different between that and a £100 phone.
OP wasn't talking £100 though. They were talking £200-250. The jump in performance from £100 to £250 is significant. From £250 to £1000? It's there, but I'd say less, and many users won't really care. Compare say £400-500 to £1000 and the difference is even less.

i don't buy the whole status symbol bit - i mean they all look pretty much the same nowadays so it surely has more to do with the perceived user experience?

completely agree with this. the features on a £200 handset now can be phenomenal. As said my Poco X3 has NFC, full HD screen, 2 day battery, 128gb storage, 6gb RAM, 64mb camera and it has a headphone jack!!!! (and charges to full within an hour).
  • I've got a Moto G7 (14 months old) and a Galaxy S10 (17 months old).  Similar size, both android, both phones.  The screen is visibly better on the S10.  It is more responsive (faster), doesn't randomly reboot every day or two or get into a state where forcing a factory reset is the only thing that will bring it back to life, which the G7 has done a couple of times.  Pokemon Go does not have random graphic glitches on the S10, but it does on the G7.  Overall the complete experience of using the S10 is significantly better, but the phone is significantly more expensive.

Oh and last thing, the battery in the S10 has not swelled up to three times its normal thickness and burst the rear part of the casing off the back of the phone, unlike the G7 which has.

I've been using Moto phones for the last few years - always a good balance between build quality, features, performance and price - and with virtually stock Android. I really don't like the interface on Samsung phones.
Currently got a g7 though I may change it in the next few months as the battery life isn't what it used to be. It's not a problem at home during lockdown but I don't think it would last a whole day if I'm out and about.  I wouldn't dare carry a £1000 phone in my pocket. I'd be too worried about losing or damaging it.
