Read a thread here recently, but cant find it now explaining it was possible to get an 0870 number that you could give to companies (eg that are also using an 0870 number). I am going to have a phone line put in in a few months and am looking at the possibilities.Would you need to have your home phone line and a seperate line to do this/Is it worth doing.

That's a great idea.
the way that 0870 numbers works is that you have a normal number and the 0870 number points calls to the normal number without anyone knowing.
The normal number still works (for friends and family) but you make money on the 0870 number.0 -
so you do only need one line. Can anyone recommend a company they have used? Or point me to any other threads (know they exist just cant find them again)0

Revenue sharing on 0870 calls is supposed to end early next year and you will then have to pay to recieve calls on 0870 numbers. Hence lots of businesses switching to 0844/0871 numbers, and lots of suppliers no longer offering them.

I'm not interested in the revenue but find my 0844 number handy for finding out the number firms/people are calling from - even if they try to hide it.
See posts 6 and 7 HERE.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

As a matter of interest:
Please note that from February 2008, companies will change the way they operate 0870 numbers following an OfCOM ruling. The charges to call 0870 numbers will be revised downwards. As such, the profit margin that gives the ability to offer revenue to end-users will be diminished or negated. Therefore, a lot of companies will stop paying revenue on these numbers, or may revert to a monthly fee or setup fee billing structure.
I have 3 0870 numbers with 2 of the biggest companies in the UK that offer this service. To date, one has actively written to me advising of the changes, and the other is doing so from January onwards.
Bear this in mind if going down the revenue route, it may not be as profitable as you think, not to mention annoying residential customers who will be paying more for the call anyway than to a regular ground number.
H.Know me for who I am, not for who I say I am.0 -
Or perhaps not for a while yet (if at all).As a matter of interest:
