Information about bringing a car into Northern Ireland here
https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/moving_to_ireland/coming_to_live_in_ireland/importing_car_into_ireland.html#This means vehicles imported from Great Britain to Northern Ireland have to go through customs and may have customs duties applied to them.
Yes, when they are then imported and re-registered in the Republic.
NI-from-new cars get a pass because of the NI Protocol's hokey-cokey status.0 -

Some plates are a different format depending on where they were originally issued, but that makes no difference to where in the country the car is registered. Plates can be transferred or swapped.
My main car has a standard XX99XXX registration, which it's carried from new, yet it was sold and first owned outside the UK mainland.0 -
Hi, I’m resurrecting this thread as I’m in the same position and the rules are still unclear due to the NI protocol. HMRC told me that in theory no additional taxes would be due buying a car in GB and bringing it back to NI, but that DVLA have been known to reject registration and ask for a NOVA (notice of vehicle arrival), with all the customs review etc. does anybody have any updated info? Many thanks.

That diagram is inaccurate. The Isle of Man is within the red circle, but is NOT part of the UK.0
