Do you have to change the registration plate after a time there?
No, but for a long time it was considered a sensible move. A GB registration number stood out and could draw the attention of the guys in balaclavas.
Loads of UK reg cars in NI these days was over last weekend and was surprised by the number of them.
Umm, you do know NI _is_ UK, right?

Unless I've missed some rather major news today...

It might well be technically but Boris’ NI protocol is making it seem less like it every day.  The movement of cars from GB to NI used to be seem less but since the start of the year, I’ve heard loads of people say that GB dealers aren’t suppling cars to NI individuals anymore. I don’t know what the reason is (but it’s Brexit related somehow) but one slightly accommodating dealer managed to get round the problem by registering the car to themselves first and then selling it as second hand.

NI is still in  EU  customs.

Hence the protests about the restrictions on goods, and hold ups on goods , entering NI from Great Britain.

i'm having trouble getting car dealers on the mainland to deal with me.  I'm perfectly happy to purchase a car there and drive it back to NI myself, but i'm having dealers tell me they can only register a car to a mainland UK address.  Is this correct?  Is there any way round this?
Yeah i'm contacting via Carwow, and had one dealer tell me this morning that they couldn't do it due to 'VAT implications'.  Are there any particular brokers to recommend? I actually have a Focus on order but it's been delayed twice now so hoping to grab something in stock.
I agree with others that this should be straightforward, but I don't want to comment any more in that regard as I don't know regarding VAT.

I just wondered, though, whether this could be to do with delivery costs - especially if they offer a car with "free delivery"?

I am also confused by this outcome using online brokers, CarWow particularly, as they ask for your post code before you get prices and I've only ever received pricing back from comparatively local dealers.  In my view, the dealers should not be quoting if they can't supply to your location.  I also once purchased via Broadspeed and the offer we went with was in the same wider geographical region as we are, though I can't remember the process - that may have been coincidence.

Certainly non-mainland delivery is usually a chunk more expensive... but since the OP says they're happy to collect within GB and then ferry to NI themselves, that's not the real issue.

I agree, but the Dealers may not have understood that they won't be incurring the ferry charges...

Still odd that the online brokers found supply that won't then complete.

Information about bringing a car into Northern Ireland here

    https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/moving_country/moving_to_ireland/coming_to_live_in_ireland/importing_car_into_ireland.html#

Northern Ireland continues to be treated as part of the EU under the trade agreement. This means vehicles imported from Great Britain to Northern Ireland have to go through customs and may have customs duties applied to them.

If you import a vehicle from Great Britain, you must make a customs declaration. You may have to pay customs duty:

    • If the vehicle’s country of origin is the UK, you do not have to pay a customs duty if it is a new vehicle. Customs charges apply to all used vehicles imported from Great Britain.
    • If the vehicle’s country of origin is the EU or a third country (for example Japan or USA), you have to pay customs duty at 10% of the value of the vehicle plus the cost of shipping

If you buy a vehicle from Northern Ireland, you do not have to make a customs declaration. But you must have proof that a customs declaration was made when the vehicle arrived in Northern Ireland from Great Britain (if applicable).
