Switching to an existing account

Can I switch a current account (using the switch service) to an account I already use with another bank, or must the switch be to open a new account only?

You can switch into an existing account, assuming both providers offer CASS switches of course....3

You always switch into an existing account, even if you apply for a new account first. The switch guarantee starts from the day you request the switch, which usually is not the date you apply for a current account.
I would never switch to an important account that isn't already fully operable - i.e. for which I don't have a debit card and PIN, and full online/app access, including any extra security gadget that some accounts still require. Some people also still use cheques, so they would/should wait until they have received their cheque book. Switching before you have all these bits could leave you with no access to your money.
Having said all this, there are a number of switch offers which require that you are a new customer. You will only get paid the switch bonus (if there is one) if you first open a current account. They will then invite you to request the switch at the end of the current account application. In such cases, you will see that the earliest switch date on offer is more than 7 working days from the application date - and you'd be well advised to either choose a date that is further in the future, or to only request the switch once you have access as above.2 -
Thanks for info. I'm a long standing customer of TSB with only minor problems in past and good branch service. However have now had enough. Getting on to online banking is like playing a 'fruit machine' you never know whether you'll hit lucky and get in or get the 'unable to connect to server' message. Done all the cookie clearing etc, but entry completely at random. This morning no connection - then connection - then cut out and no connection. Almost impossible to get in to branch to discuss any business.
Only problem is with TSB credit card - requires existing TSB current account. Does anyone know if TSB Classic current still requires monthly deposit of £500 as no interest paid now. If regular deposit no longer required, I could keep the account open with minimum use to continue the credit card. I have a credit card with my other bank current account, but like to have one that I keep for online use only.0 -
The TSB Classic account doesn't exist any longer. It's now called Spend and Save and is free of charge (as opposed to the Spend and Save Plus account).
You can easily keep a TSB current account by simply opening another one, thus fulfilling the requirement for your TSB CC. You can then switch your main TSB account to wherever you want.1 -

My experience with TSB glitches seem to be mostly with MS Edge, but it seems to work fine with google... no excuse for them not sorting it out, I know.0

Think the best thing I can do is let them open the saver account they say they will do when my regular saver expires next month. Leave a small amount in this to remain a TSB customer and continue with my credit card. Will switch and close the current account and see what happens.0

Will you be able to withdraw your money from a TSB savings account without going via a TSB current account?
What's your reluctance opening another TSB current account?1 -

Edit: Just went in to TSB to check rules on savings account, BUT can't even open TSB website. Get the message unable to connect to server on Chrome and Firefox even after clearing cookies, history, etc.0 -

Get the message unable to connect to server on Chrome and Firefox even after clearing cookies, history, etc.Cookies, history etc. have no bearing on being unable to connect to server, as they are not checked until the server has been reached.I've just checked, I can see their info pages, and the Easy Saver that the RS will become appears to need a current account to operateIf you’ve got a TSB Current Account, you can open an account online with just £1.You can easily transfer money instantly between your Easy Saver and TSB current accountWhile I've had various weird things happen while logged in to TSB, such as running s l o w l y, transient messages across the screen, or being logged out for no apparent reason, it was only at the height of their IT meltdown that I was ever unable to log in, and then only sometimes.Sounds like a firewall or connectivity problem. You could try pinging www.tsb.co.uk from a terminal window. I getPING e2972.ksd.akamaiedge.net (104.98.224.111) 56(84) bytes of data.
