6 year old car never MOTd

  • So I was in McDonald’s car park last night and there was Ford S max that the police were all over so I googled the reg like you do and it has never been MOTd even though it was due it’s first MOT in Jan 2018. How is this even possible, no mot = insurance presumably for at least 3 years. I didn’t see anyone in the car so maybe they had already been nicked and taken in.
There are estimated (by the MIB) to be something like 1m+ uninsured cars on UK roads (1:30 or so), it's not unlikely that someone who doesn't bother doing their MOT doesn't bother insuring or anything else

No MOT doesn’t equal no insurance.
Not guaranteed but it is highly likely.

If someone chooses not to get their car MOTed, most likely reason is because they know it needs work which they don't want to pay for, in other words they're driving a car which is potentially unroadworthy. Someone with that mindset is just the sort of person who's happy to drive an uninsured car.

Well you can easily check if it is insured...

I look up the reg of cars I'm interested in buying but why would you look up the reg of a car stopped by the police? Being of interest to the police doesn't automatically mean it's about the car being dodgy.
  • I have completely forgotten about my MOT’s a couple of times.  It wasn’t because of the vehicles being, dodgy, but more to do with my brain forgetting which car was due when along with all the other stuff that being a working parent involves.

I hasten to add that my vehicles nowadays are all taxed, MOT’d and insured!

Or it's a unmarked Police car.
For some reason Police cars and vans are exempt from having an MOT as its deemed they are always kept to have a good standard in the Police workshops.
  • That would make the most sense.

Know Your Car app is very good and free for checking mot, tax, advisories etc
  • The 2004 Ford Focus bangernomic contender I bought a few weeks ago is listed as having it's first MOT in 2015 when It should have been 2007. No idea where it has been or used for until 2015 when it first appears on the MOT database.

One thing for sure is it has only had 2 owners from new before me and the last owner had it since 2015. Also the car appears to have remained local ever since it was first purchased/registered from a local Ford dealership just a few miles away from me.
It probably was on private plate and records weren't correctly associated with standard plate, when it was put on.

I sold the car which was missing one MOT, because records didn't associate back to standard plate. I wrote to Vosa with both plates information and they corrected it.
