Travel insurance automatically renewed April 2020

I booked a non cancellable Rotterdam hotel on 5 Feb 2020. Coronavirus restrictions prevented travelling. Hotel offered same dates one year later and dates are 7-16 May 2021, so one day before Government will allow travel.
Hotel will not waive non refund of payment.
As AXA policy renewed in April 2020 I believe I read that I'm still covered for Covid restrictions. If this correct?

I sure that I read about a company that refused a pay out and a judgement said that if cover was continuous it would apply r bookings up to a date in September 2020. I even found a different insurer that said claims up to then would be included. I was hoping that someone here would be aware of this and be able to entlighten me before making a claim. My claim would be before the current policy expires.

Until the dates have past you haven't actually lost anything so have nothing to claim.0

Government has stipulated that none but essential travel will be authorised until at least 17 May, which is the day after this booking. I contacted booking.com and they have confirmed that and there will be no refund. I have had to cancel my flights and so also the hotel booking. So I can't claim until after the date?
I did find out this:
Aviva states that: 'We will cover trips booked during one period of insurance but not taking place until the next period of insurance if your annual multi trip policy with us is still in force at the time of an incident resulting in a claim.'

If your current insurance ends in April and the date of your holiday is in May you will have to renew your policy otherwise you aren’t covered. If you don’t have insurance cover at the date of travel you can’t claim.0

If you cancel your will not cover you.
You need to wait until the date of the holiday or whatever date your policy stipulates. Some say if advice is against travel 28;days before the date.S one say the date if travel.
You need to check your policy wording.0 -
Thanks Sheramber. This is the best advice yet.
Digging into the policy it states:
Cover includes cancellation if...... The Travel Advice Unit of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) or other regulatory authority in a country in which you are travelling advising against all travel, or all but essential travel, to the area you are travelling to/in.
Another section states that this can be up to 28 days before travel so a claim could be made on 10th April.
So it doesn't need to be claimed on the date of travel.

Mmm. Still think you would be risking it if you don’t have cover for dates of travel but am happy to be corrected. Good luck.0

If 10 April is before policy ends then he will find out when he claims if he is covered. If the policy needs to renew he can do that.0
