TalkTalk increase of price April2021

Options
I agreed to a fixed price 18 month contract for broadband in October 60 mb download for £26 p.m. I was surprised today to receive an email saying my price will increase by £2 p.m. from April. I rang TT and spent 15 minutes explaining we had both agreed a fixed price contract for 18 months and that legally that could not be increased. The operative simply kept reading the issues TT have faced dealing with the pandemic and clearly repeating from a script. After explaining several times that they could not break that contract I was transferred to a retention team. I explained I did not want to leave simply to retain my existing package at the same price. This conversation lasted 25 minutes and in the end the operative offered me a new package and read through my new terms and conditions for me to agree. However it was stated that my maximum speed would be 37 mbs , when I queried this she said I’m not going to change your line at all nothing changes. I said of course it does you want me to agree to a downgrade in service so be very careful as the terms and conditions are rattled through very quickly. I turned that down and eventually I was offered a new contract with 70 mbs download for my original £26 on a fixed 18 month contract. I’m very happy with the package but not with the company attitude to customer service as you have to be very aware of changes that can catch you out.

Its normal with current fixed contracts from most suppliers .
Contract is either we reserve the right to increase prices mid contract under Ofcom rules . Or pre agreed price increase of CPI = xx% .
    Both informed on setup

Ofcom have just removed restrictions on wholesale prices as well /

I have read on numerous sites that it states in the small print of contacts that TalkTalk and other suppliers can now increase mid contract yet on my renewal email which they sent me in June last year, this is what it said, ''no mid contract price rises for 18 months'' so surely they cannot increase my contract?:

Got the email yesterday, it clearly stated I was entitled to leave mid-contract without penalty. There was no pre-agreed price rise term in my contract. Found their retentions department to be very reasonable, I was fully expecting to have to insist on switching but they bettered the best available deal for me (Shell) including the bill credit, no attempted downgrade in this case.
New contracts do have an inflation + 3.7% price increase baked into them, though I've avoided this year's increase.

That inflation + 3.7% starts next April.

Yes, this year the increase is not based on an inflation-linked measure, it would have been a round £2 for me, but I've avoided that.
