Shopping around when part of your bundle contract (mobile phone) is due to expire

I have a SIM only contract with Vodafone for a mobile that gives me unlimited UK text and calls and 4GB of date a month for 10.35. This is due to expire April 8th. I moved to a flat by myself in September last year and decided to take out a 2 year broadband contract with Vodafone which costs me 20.00 a month - it's not the top super fast link, but it's fast enough for me (I live by myself and have been working part of the time at home). I got a discount on the price because I already had my SIM only phone contract with them. I was told the price for broadband would have been around 22.00 a month if I hadn't had my phone contract with them. So in total my monthly Vodafone bill is 30.35 for phone and internet. I haven't called Vodafone yet but when I took out the broadband contract I was told that if I shifted my phone contract to someone else, I would lose the broadband discount. I know I could likely get a cheaper SIM only deal with my phone if I shopped around, but I have to factor in the broadband increase if I do as the contract runs for 2 years from last September. Is there any deal calculator on the Money Saving Expert site that can help me with this? Or any deal calculator on the Internet that takes into account the cost impact of unbundled contracts? Any tips appreciated around shopping around when one part of the bundle contract is up for renewal and the other part still has time to run would be much appreciated. I'm not sure how much discount Vodafone will offer me if I push for a lower phone bill as they know they've got me with the broadband contract for another year! Last year I renewed my phone with them as it seemed the easiest thing with the pandemic going on and stores not easily accessible but the person I spoke to on the phone had a very much take it or leave it attitude (and that was before I subsequently took out my broadband contract with them). I've had good service from Vodafone but would like to avoid paying more than I need to for phone and internet as am on a small budget. Thanks.

You dont really need a deal calculator - the sums are easy enough to do. All you have to do is subtract the value of the discount from Vodafone phone or add it to the cost of a non-Vodafone phone

Assume BB* = £30 but with the VF discount = £20 therefore discount = £10
get a VF phone for £20, subtract £10 BB discount = £10 Total outlay £40

Lose BB discount therefor it now costs  £30 (£20+£10)
Mobile phone £10 the total outlay is still £40

*use your own numbers to work it out

  • £2 a month discount on Vodafone sounds right. As matelodave is indicating you just deduct that from the £10.35 a month you are paying for the sim-only contract.
So any replacement sim-only contract less than £8.35 is cheaper than what you currently have.
As you like Vodafone, perhaps the Lebara sim deal you will see in the MSE weekly email will make sense for you (either the 3GB or 5GB depending on your actual usage). It is a Vodafone signal and as it's just a 1 month rolling contract you still have flexibility to move again if you don't like their service/app/online account.
