Working From Home - Self assessment problem

Options
hi,
Am obviously new and joined to see if anyone can help as I have tried calling but HMRC they are to busy and end the call
I have made a self assessment  claim ( raised on 5 March 2021)  via the website just for working from home from 23/03/2020 which didnt seem to be a problem. I have received a new Tax code letter detailing the value and £9 relates to 2019-20 year.  I today received a fine for self assessment penalties for doing a tax return late for 2019/20.
I did try and do this on the 29th January but had issues logging in and have a support refence to which i received no reply.  I ended up trying again on the 5th March, which worked.
Things are stressful enough and i was just trying to get a little money back approx £60 . now its cost me £100 and tell me to do my tax return for 2019/20
Any help would be much appreciated
thanks Michael

Are you self-employed or paid via PAYE?

When you say you have made a self assessment claim for 19/20, firstly that would cover the period that ended at the end of March 2020, so would only cover a few weeks of working from home. Also 31/01 was the deadline, however you have been able to submit a tax return for the 19/20 tax year since April last year, and had until the end of February to submit late, but without a fine.
  • I pay via PAYE. Employed office worker. I made  a self assessment for 2020/21 claim and it was back dated to 23/03/2020 as advised on here which is when i was told to work from home due to the virus. I have not done a tax return for 2019/20 although my claim obviously goes just in to 2019/20 tax year.
    From MSE below
"In fact, you can actually use it to claim just a smidge before this tax year too. You can use it to make a claim since lockdown started on 23 March 2020 – just put that date in. Do that and you'll get a refund for the whole of this tax year (which started 6 April 2020) and two weeks extra on top."
  • apologies  - self assessment return. I was just trying to get a bit back due to working from home

Self Assessment customers who cannot file their tax return by the 31 January 2021 deadline will not receive a late filing penalty if they file online by 28 February.

  • You can't have completed a self assessment for 20/21 as the tax year isn't over and you won't have the relevant documents as they are issued by your employer after the tax year end.

Hi, I did check all this before but please also see below just incase anyone else would like to read

The HMRC Website states: “You can apply now for tax relief in this tax year even if you do not know how much longer you will be working from home.

“This is because we will apply tax relief for the whole of this tax year, even if you go back to your workplace before 6 April 2021.”As Martin said in his newsletter, if your employer asked you to work from home before that date due to coronavirus, you can claim from March 23, 2020.If you make a claim starting from March 23, 2020, a confirmation message will appear stating: “You will receive tax relief on your expenses for working from home for 2 weeks of the last tax year (6 April 2019 to 5 April 2020).“You will also receive tax relief for the whole of this tax year (6 April 2020 to 5 April 2021), however long you worked or are working from home.”You will also be advised that “at the end of this tax year, the tax relief will stop. If you are required to work from home after 5 April 2021, you will need to claim again.”

  • What Martin was talking about is completing the online form which leads to an in-year change in your tax coding to give you the tax relief. This is not completing a self assessment tax return which is completely different and leads to a refund after the end of the tax year. You have repeatedly stated that you completed a self assessment.

hi, yes exactly as I say
well im sorry for the confusion but i used the microsite to do this. the fine is for a late tax return and I only used the microsite
letter is headed Self Assessment : Late Tax return
The fine states it is for doing a late Tax return penalty for 2019/20. I have not done a tax return for then. All i can assume is it relates the the small part from 23/03/20 to the start on the tax year for 20/21, but according to all the info I can use 23/03/20
