Years ago, I was with Freedom2surf, which worked well for years, but, when it went down, the "customer support" just took the pi55, and kept you on the phone waiting for hours on end.

Customer support depends on the quality of the staff and management.

Freedom2Surf was bought by Pipex, which was sold to Tiscali which was bought out by TalkTalk.  Shell broadband is resold TalkTalk internet, much like the Post Office was.

Never been with Pipex, was with Tiscali, and TalkTalk though, TalkTalk get a lot of stick on this forum, but my experience was fine and they have a good forum. Was with BT from the mid 90's to early 2000's about seven years.

Might go back to BT, they are probably the most reliable, if expensive ISP. I dunno.

Yes it does, and good staff cost money.  It's an area where cheap ISPs save money by not employing good staff or enough staff.  That's why you always hear horror stories about support from cheap ISPs and not for realistically priced ones.
