port number ? the suplied lead is usb , not serial or parrallel port
Could this be a USB-Serial converter lead? I've had issues in the past as many of these converter leads use Prolific chips - or to be more precise, Chinese copies. Prolific doctored their drivers so of they detect a non-genuine chip, the drivers don't work = so any device connected won't be recognised (although some earlier ones back in the days of XP would disable the chips). In terms of amateur radio, I prefer the FTDI based converters - more reliable.
Under "Computer Management -> Device Management" take a look for anything under "Ports" which are marked with an error
Also, some Prolific chips went end of life with Windows 8 or 8.1 so there are no drivers - so if using Win10 then they won't work.
If you google "prolific usb to serial not working" you will get a number of relevant hits - "https://www.totalcardiagnostics.com/support/Knowledgebase/Article/View/92/20/prolific-usb-to-serial-fix-official-solution-to-code-10-error" might be worth a read

  • not sure where you are getting serial from , the unit had a micro usb socket on the side , the uni come suplied with a micro to usb lead ,
the unit has a date stamp of 2019 , the program , is only available in one flavour that is xp 7 8 and 10 , there is no mention of 32 bit or 64

the first thing i checked was the computer management , plugging in and upplugging to see if anything appeared
as previously stated the unit seems only to have warrenty and support by sealey and in responce to being unable to get the prog working there "tech help" was "As the device cannot be found when linking to the PC there is nothing further we can advise."
I am overwelmed with level of customer support that much , i have organised a return of the unit

The usb will either be a serial port or possibly an external drive.
  • or in the case of a not genuine autel product , it will not be seen at all , in fact one of the tech support at sealey suggested that the memory card had to be removed and placed in a card reader , because the autel suplied program (for the ols301) would not see the machine ,,,,,,,,,,, wonder why

the unit is being collected tomorrow , the retailer is doing this , he will check the screen display and has said he will try to run the prog , before returning it to sealey
they were under the impression that those were genuine autel products with full uk/eu warrenty and are not happy now carrying stock or listing them on there website

Have you got some different form of Universal Serial Bus that is not Serial?
Connecting my Autel OBD reader assigns it a port number.

I have arduino's that also get assigned a port number when connecting to a PC.  Probably why
    you cannot see your device.

thats just the problerm , it does not , the unit is not seen by the computer , or indeed 3 different , now tested on a win 10 32 bit , win 10 64 bit and a windows 7 32 bit computer   now , and we have tried 3 different leads ,
however plugging the uniy in , DOES supply it with power to light the display , but there is no data cnnection

What is it listed under in windows device manager?

  • NOTHING , absolutly NOTHING  as mentioned previously , the computer(s) do not see or recognise any device plugged in , apart from providing power to light it up (display screen) , there is no data connection as all
3 computers , 4 x usb cables , as mentioned to me on another forum "you have to take the memory card out and use card reader to upload any updates"
the suplied prigram will never run , therefore there can be no production and printout of data this fact has been pointed out by the uK official importer , only genuine autel products can be seen by the program , define genuine ?
