More seriously, though, it is a sad fact of life that these family pressures on living space are short-lived and all too often, by the time you invest in the solution, the "problem" has grown up and left the nest!  (...or is still in the nest but has turned nocturnal, so no longer competing in the morning!)
Haha!  We opted for a combi exactly because of that!

I've stopped being confused by the sound of running water at midnight.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned sharing bathwater.

Given the length of time my then teenage boys spent in the shower, I wouldn’t say that a shower is quicker or loses less water. In fact the benefit of a combi was that anyone spending too long in the shower would result in a loss of power in the shower as I would turn on a tap or flush the toilet elsewhere.

Once a week on a Sunday night in my childhood home. The hot tank was so small you couldn't even get enough hot to immerse yourself in, and as for adding cold water in first, you'd risk sitting in a tepid bath.  Deep joy, it most certainly wasn't.

    Insulation?

As it's a pre-existing tank, what's the insulation on it like?
Is the pipe from the boiler to the tank insulated?
Are the pipes from the tank insulated?

Reading between the lines I would assume you have a megaflow unvented cylinder
Isn't there a thing with Megaflo that if the 'bubble' isn't maintained, they start ditching hot water down the tundish on heating, and you don't end up with a full tank of hot water.  Also T+P valve fault can similarly lose hot water, IIRC.

@FrankFalcon what sort of water tank do you have?

I love threads like this, people post a question, members take time out of their day to reply then the op doesn't even reply
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
