If they've stopped selling the shoes it could be because they're an old design and in which case it's likely they were manufactured quite a while ago. It could be the sole material is quite old and stiff which could leave to cracking, a bit like old car tyres than have been sitting for a while.

About 500 miles is generally regarded as a good lifespan for a decent pair of running shoes, I know these aren't running shoes but you're putting over 100 miles on these a week so it doesn't surprise me that your first pair is so worn, particularly as I wouldn't class the outsole as full on walking shoe material.

If I was walking 15 miles a day every day, I'd want something with more support than these shoes have.

That a lot of wear on the tread pattern for 8 weeks of moderate walking

Do you have a link for them on another site Ecco for example ?
The first picture with all the wear is from his first pair of shoes that were returned.
    Missed that initially - thanks

OP - if offered, I would take a refund (as opposed to a credit note) and try and find a different brand more suited to standing up to 100+ miles a week
  • !5 miles a day!  For seven days a week!  And you are overweight?

15 miles a day at 3mph means that you are walking for five straight hours a day.  Are you absolutely sure that you mean 15 miles a day?  I do a lot of walking but would never do anything like 15 miles per day.  That's a big day hill walking or even low-level walking on a walking holiday.

Is it to do with your job?  (I may be wrong but I doubt a postman covers 15 miles a day).

I f you are doing 15 x 7 I agree with others that those flimsy looking shoes are not suitable.  In fact they almost look more like a "closed-toe" type sandal shoe.  The uppers a are only a relatively wide mesh material, aren't they?

I do walk an arrange of 15 miles a day, 7 days a week. I go on a 5 mile walk every morning before sunrise. leave home at 4.30am getting home at 6am before it gets light, I change routine with lighter/darker mornings, then walk throughout the day with day services with clients,, at 4pm I go on another one hour walk. I enjoy walking.

It really helps with my mental health as I have mental health problems which I take antipsychotics in injection form. This causes weight gain easily. I have depressive lows and manic highs and when low I drink excessively I neglect myself = no walking. No motivation to cook so lots of takeaways, When I'm normal mood or hyper-manic I choose to walk alot as this boosts my mood and I really do enjoy walking while listening to music.

I chose to wear the faulty/replacement walking shoes from ECCO as they look better when wearing joggers, I like joggers as they are comfortable. My other walking shoes don't fit with joggers.

I would of thought the replacement shoes would of lasted more than 7 weeks. On second thoughts they are very flimsy. Not robust like my walking shoes below but they are from a respectable outdoor clothing company call Rohan and I would of thought they would be quality. But reading the thread PollyCat posted I google ECCO and they seem a bad company. Won't be buying from them again,

These are my other walking shoes and are very good.

OK.  If you are doing that much mileage you need something like a trailwalking or hiking shoe.  Never heard of Oboz but they look more like the sort of thing you need.  If those shoes work for you and you like them, get some more!

Edit: I'd go back to Rohan and tell them they,ve failed again after 7 weeks (or however long it is).  Say that they don't seem to be up to the job and as you've noticed they no longer appear to stock them, you want a refund.  I'd expect them to be quite reasonable about it (but you may not want to volunteer you are walking over 100 miles per week in them!).

EDIT2:  I know your shoes are not running shoes - which probably wouldn't be suitable for the long distance walking you are doing anyway - but the average life of a running shoe is between 300 - 550 miles.  I know that after 500 miles I am through the outsole at the heel on my running shoes an dinto the midsole.  I know trail shoes will have a bit more durable outsole, but you are covering an awful lot of miles... !

What do you define as moderate walking?  What types of surface?  Do you have a habit of crouching down on the balls of your feet?
The first photo looks like the left hand shoe is pretty much worn out and the second photo is showing significant wear.  A friend of mine does a lot of walking and he is happy to get 6 months out of a pair of shoes - I would be lucky to get 9-12 months.
Just average walking. 15 miles a day, 7 days a week. I am overweight too if that could be the cause of them wearing out? Normally I can get 2 years out of walking shoes often the insoles going first.

Rohan is geared for outdoorsy people and I would think their shoes would be sturdy enough for walkers, not wearing out after 8 weeks.
I am not really sure I would class that as moderate walking by any stretch. I jog10k four days a week and I walk 5k+ most other days and I very much doubt that my walking/jogging habits would be classed as moderate. I normally get 4-6 months out of a pair of trainers for running the soles will be less worn, but will have lost support.

I am not overweight, but I was and exercise was what allowed me to shift the weight and I used to wear out shoes/soles and trainers a lot quicker when I was overweight, so good luck with that part!

Also I note the wear pattern, do you fully lift your foot up when you walk, I wonder as it looks like you might be scuffing part of the sole as you walk forward, this can happen with different types of shoes, especially when the sole is thicker than you are previously used to. It also looks like you have a very off centre heel strike which can over time cause ankle issues, so you might actually be better with walking boots rather than shoes to help correct that.

Finally, from what I can see online it is estimated that for trainers/walking shoes/walking boots, depending on the personal walking style, terrain, bodyweight, how much load you are carrying etc. you should get between 500-1,000 miles from a pair, you got around 840 so that would seem reasonable on that basis.

I never really thought of this. Thank you. I will look how to improve my walking technique.

And a big thank you for everybody who replied. I will be sending the walking shoes back when they've split a bit more. I will post back and let you know what they say.

    Why?
Why wait until they deteriorate more?
Why not contact Rohan now and get it sorted? You have photos of how the original pair went. It's obvious that the 2nd pair are going to go exactly the same way.
What do you think you are gaining by waiting?

If these are the only walking shoes you have, what are you going to do if you're out on your 5 miles walk and they split right across?
    Or it starts to rain?
