Painting a concrete lintel

My house is behind repointed and as part of the job the lintel above my bedroom window is being replaced with a concrete one.
Can someone give me an idea of the best way to paint it? I'm assuming masonry paint, but will it need anything prep first? I'm a bit clueless about these sorts of things.

No reliance should be placed on the above.

There shouldn't be any need for prepping other than brushing it down well with a stiff brush to remove any loose coating. Then use water too for a quick wash with the brush and rinse off - just to make sure any cement dust coating has been removed.Read the instructions on the paint - if it suggests a slightly thinned first coat, do this. Otherwise, fill yer boots.2
